Apparently, former Bellmont football coaches Rick Burkhalter and Greg Meyer, co-head coaches two years ago with the sudden resignation of Toney Bergman, are not riding off into the sunset after a big run at Bellmont.
South Adams Athletic Director Mike Pries was happy to confirm Wednesday that both Burkhalter and Meyer will be assistant coaches for Jason Arnold and the South Adams Starfires this fall.
An 8-run fifth stopped this one as Hull Lift Trucks slammed DDS 13-1 in a battle of Decatur Mays clubs Tuesday. Colin Mills doubled with 2 of Hull's 7 hits in the victory.
Logan Arriaga took the win as he came on in the third to a bases-loaded jam and threw one pitchy, getting David Noetzel to ground back to the mound to get out of the mess. Andy has been the varsity assistant coach at Columbus North High School the past five years, the past four years under coach Jason Speer (37-26). Columbus North went 13-8 and 15-6 the past two season.
The North Adams Community Schools' board of education approved the hiring of a varsity girls basketball coach, and accepted the resignation of its longtime girls tennis coach, during Tuesday evening's meeting.
Named as girls varsity basketball coach was Andy Heim, who will take over the reins of the program from Tory Fuelling, who had resigned. Named as assistant girls cage coach for next season was Lindy Fuelling.
Heim is also the boys head track coach at Bellmont.
Kyle Witter drove a fastball over the left fielder's head with two on in the top of the eighth inning, then he raced around the bases before McIntire could make a play at the plate as Erie Haven handed McIntire it's first loss in 11 Koufax games this summer, 9-6. Erie Haven improved to 8-0 with the victory.
A three-run sixth helped Monroe Grain to an 8-7 win over the Farm Bureau Lifers Monday in a key Monroe Little League game. That game, plus the 14-2 win by Peterson Grain over Bank of Geneva, put the Lifers and Peterson tied at 9-3 on the season, tops in the league.
Monroe Grain improved to 7-5 win the win. Kyle Brown tripled while Ian Wellmann and Brown both doubled. Wellman had two hits.
Dylan Miller and Drew Schultz both doubled with 2 hits for Lifers. Anthony Mosser offered 2 hits.
Bryce Baumgartner, who is not a stranger to national championships, didn't have it as a goal to win the triple crown of Indiana wrestling this past spring.
"Because I do it every year," said the 12-year-old soon to be seventh grader at Bellmont Middle School.
Well, he has done just that — win Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco-Roman titles — in each of the past three seasons. He did it this year as a 120-pound Novice.
(Caden Friedt was one of two Decatur Wrestling Club grapplers to win the state mat triple crown, state titles in Folkstyle, Greco-Roman, and Freestyle.)
Most nine-year-old boys worry about video games and when the next trip to McDonald's is slated.
Caden Friedt, the nephew of the late John Friedt, took on more somber thoughts this spring with the passing of his uncle, who had been a dedicated wrestling coach for Bellmont and Decatur for almost four decades.
