"We told the kids at the start of the year that there would be adversity, we just didn't know where. As it turns out it comes with the injury to Brooks. We were the team to beat, it just didn't happen," stated veteran Bellmont assistant coach Tim Myers after the Al Smith Classic last week at Mishawaka.
Bellmont, with nine placers and three making to the finals, led most of the way, but yeilded in the end to Penn by three points.
The junior varsity game will begin at 6 p.m. tonight at the Stardome as Bellmont travels to South Adams for boys basketball action.
No frosh game is scheduled.
Bellmont will take a 3-3 record into the contest after the recent win over Adams Central. The Starfires are 2-5.
School officials note that the Bank of Geneva will conduct a $100 shooting contest at halftime of the varsity game.
MISHAWAKA — Bellmont put up a strong effort for the two-day Al Smith Classic at Mishawaka last week, but a rally by Penn in the final round plus a bad break for the Braves — a broken hand suffered by junior 140-pounder Brooks Faurote — resulted in a narrow Kingsmen win, 208-205.
MUNCIE—The Adams Central girls varsity basketball team enjoyed an early New Year's present Thursday night by traveling to Muncie Southside and claiming a 51-32 victory over the Rebels.
The Jets won three of the four quarters. After two lead changes and two ties, the AC squad took a 20-18 lead at the half and then posted 16-7 and 15-7 margins in the final two stanzas to earn the victory.

MISHAWAKA — Bellmont's John Mahlan tripped LaPorte's Alex Stewart at the edge of the mat as the final seconds ticked off the clock in the 160-pound match to advance, and he latched onto Stewart's leg, earning the buzzer-beating takedown to secure one of five BHS spots in the semi-finals in the Al Smith Wrestling Classic.
The Braves have four more wrestlers on the consolation side and led the 32-team tourney after the first day with 128 points to the 123 of Penn and 121 of host Mishawaka.
Bellmont guard Joe Baker drilled in two three-point shots on consecutive possessions to start the second period to give the Braves a 24-21 lead Tuesday night and the Braves never trailed thereafter enroute to a 70-63 triumph over county rival Adams Central at the Teepee.
A high school football player in Arizona, one with strong ties to Decatur and Adams County, recently completed a highly successful grid season and is being recruited by several colleges to continue his playing career.
KJ Gould, grandson of Jay and Carolyn Gould of rural Berne, also achieved success in soccer, and track during his high school career. He will have 12 varsity letters when he graduates, according to information furnished by the Gould family.
Bellmont has won the Mishawaka Wrestling Invitational 14 times, more than any other school, and the last Braves' win came in 2003.
That's one winless streak that Bellmont would like to end.
"It's wide open. There are five or six teams with a legitimate chance. Whoever places the most, pops the most into the finals will win the tourney," stated Bellmont coach Brent Faurote.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Jeff Brooks had a career-high 23 points and Talor Battle added 19 to help Penn State hold off Indiana 69-60 on Monday night.
The Nittany Lions (8-4, 1-0 Big Ten) snapped a two-game losing streak with their second straight win at Assembly Hall — a venue where they had lost 15 straight before finally winning a game two years ago. The two teams met only once last season, in State College, Pa.
Bellmont has four top-four seeds for the annual 32-team Al Smith Classic at Mishawaka High School this week, including top seeds Travis Thatcher at 215 pounds and heavyweight Daniel Meyer.
The tourney, once dominated by Bellmont, will be held Wednesday and Thursday of this week starting at 9 a.m.
Five of the top 10 rated teams in the state are in the tourney: No. 4 Merrillville, No. 5 Mishawaka, No. 7 Lawrence North, No. 8 Penn and No. 10 Bellmont.
