PORTLAND — "All in all it wasn't a bad day, getting 10 through with four champs, a second and three thirds. I was pretty pleased," stated Bellmont wrestling coach Brent Faurote have his Braves flexed their muscles at the Jay County Regional wrestling tourney Saturday.
Seniors John Mahlan, Ryley Hankenson, and Travis Thatcher all repeated as regional champs for the Braves, and and senior Daniel Meyer took the heavyweight crown, pinning promising SA frosh Maverick Morningstar in the final.
PORTLAND—South Adams continued its tradition of sending swimmers to the IHSAA state finals in swimming on Saturday as senior Erika Waugh breezed to a pair of individual victories in the 100 backstroke and 500 freestyle in the 37th annual IHSAA state swimming sectional held at Jay County High School.
Waugh was impressive in the backstroke event as she easily beat the field with a clocking of 1:00.85. When she touched the pad to finish her race, she was over three seconds ahead of the second place Norwell swimmer,
South Adams A.D. Mike pries has announced the slate for the 2A South Adams Girls Basketball Sectional slated next week in Berne. He also notes some changes made in the athletic slate because of the weather.
The first game of the SA tourney will feature one of the top teams in the state in Bishop Luers. They will meet Bluffton at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8.
With the Team Regional rescheduled for next week, Bellmont coach Brent Faurote can worry about getting the most wrestlers he can through to semistate.
The Team Regional is scheduled for the Wednesday after sectional, then the teams don't compete again until after the State Individual Finals, over three weeks.
"I don't know what the rush is about," said the BHS Coach. "I think it should be the following Wednesday. We have plenty of time to get it in."
The Jay County Girls Swim Sectional preliminary round, will be held Friday at Jay County instead of tonight, it was noted today by Jay Athletic Director Bob Lutton Thursday morning. The finals will be held on Saturday, as scheduled.
All three county schools will have teams in the meet.
First-year Central coach Patti Sauer feels that her outstanding freestyler, Ali McClain, has the best chance for a top placement from her team.
The four-team Adams Central Team Regional Wrestling Tournament, originally set for last night, will now be held on Wednesday, Feb. 9, it was announced last night by Adams Central Athletic Director Rick Minnich, who has been working this week to find a good make-up date.
Previously, it was announced that make-up dates would be today or Monday. Minnich was in contact with the IHSAA and worked out the Wednesday date, which will obviously be much better for the wrestlers, who compete Saturday in individual regionals.
Two Bellmont freestylers are seeded fourth for Thursday's Jay County Girls Swim Sectional Prelims, frosh Rachel Klingensmith in the 100 free and Mikayla Voglewede in the 500 freestyle.
Chloe Mock, Megan Maynard, Kelsey Link and Erin Hunter are all seeded in the top 12 for Belmont in both of their events. Sarra EVans, Peighton Morlan, Hannah Mendez, and Bailee Hankenson are seeded in the top 12 in one of their events, notes BHS coach Drew Norby.
