Stars lose season opener to Blackford

August 14, 2012

    South Adams opened their volleyball season at home last night with a contest against the Blackford Lady Bruins that ended in a four set win for the visitors spoiling new head coach Amie Sprunger's first match.
    After losing the first set, 25-21, the Stars let set two fall away without a fight, 25-12. Coach Sprunger rallied the troops and SA came alive taking the third set, 25-16, then fell, 29-27 in extra volleyball during the fourth set.

AC football players' auction success

    Bellmont's girls golf squad hosted seven teams for a match at Cross Creek Golf Course on Wednesday night and the result was storybook between the top three teams, all separated by one stroke.

Canales wins homerun derby

LET THE BIG CAT PURRRR—Drexel Canales, affectionately known as "The Big Cat" by players and friends, recently won the BPA World Series Home Run Derby in Peoria, Illinois. Starting with 30 competitors, Canales had six homeruns in 10 swings including a blast of over 300 feet. The Big Cat, representing the Fort Wayne Stars Academy, sealed the derby crown when he hit five more dingers in a play-off round. Squaws take third in SA invite

    South Adams' girls golf hosted their annual invitational at the Golf Club of the Limberlost in Geneva on Saturday with a seven field team including the team champion Wabash Lady Apaches who won the event by 12 strokes over Fairfield who finished second.

City of Decatur Golf Tournament results

    The 2012 City of Decatur Golf Tournament made a successful run this weekend at Cross Creek Golf Course in a two-round format on Saturday and Sunday.
    Dr. Mike Ainsworth posted his first win in come-from behind fashion after hitting a 74 in his first round, then shooting a stellar 68 for the second round to win with a -2 142 for the weekend. At even par ending up with a 144 for the tournament was Luke Ainsworth recording a 73 and a 71 respectively for his two rounds.

Braves 14U squad sweeps Monroe tourney

     BRAVES TAKE MONROE—The Decatur Braves 14U all-star team finished the season by playing in the Brickhouse Monroe Tournament  from July 26-29th. The Braves won their pool games by defeating the Portland team with a score of 36-2, then beat the Monroe Harvestland team, 7-1. In the semis, Monroe's Crushers got beat by Portland & the Braves defeated Harvestland once again, this time, 3-2. Bellmont finished their title run with a win in the championship game beating Portland, 12-0.

Little League post-season awards presented

      REESE AWARD WINNERS—The above 12-and-under Decatur Baseball players received post-season awards recently at Rube Wynn Field. Tyler Bauer (top, left), Lukas Strickler (next to Bauer), and Nate Kaczmarek (below) were given the annual Leo Alberding Outstanding Player Awards for their regular season accomplishments. Kaczmarek, Jordan Fuelling (top, right) and Peyton Staub (second from right), all players for the tourney champion Decatur Dental squad, were given Tourney Most Valuable Player Awards. DBA Skills competition winners

     Last week, the Decatur Baseball Association hosted a skills competition for the Mays and Reese Leagues and had a successful turnout. The skills contest tested players ability to bat and field among other fundamentals.

   Jon Ruble, a player from Decatur Dental, took first place in the Reese League competition, while Tanner Walker, Kobe Oritz, and Caden Staub all took home trophies for their work from the Mays League.
