South Adams, rated No. 19 in the state, completed a perfect wrestling regular season over the weekend by capturing the Tri Invitational with a 5-0 mark.
For the season, the Starfires finished 27-0, going 5-0 at Tri, the ECIC at Jay County, the New Castle Super Duals, the Spencer Haworth Invitational at SA, and at the Homestead Super Duals.
The Stars had one close match Saturday, defeating Alexandria 37-31. The Stars also defeated Hamilton Heights 54-15, Southridge 58-9, Northeastern 72-9 and Tri High 76-6.
For the most part Saturday night, the Bellmont Squaws' gas tank was running fairly smooth on 87 octane.
Unfortunately for the Squaws, their opponents, the Norwell Knights were running full tilt on 93 octane and the Knights, now 14-1 on the year, polished off the Squaws, now 7-8, by a 72-51 count at the Teepee.
Bellmont charged out of the locker room and outscored visiting Van Wert 8-1 to start the third period, taking a 41-40 lead, but the unbeaten Cougars regrouped, found their offense and outscored the Braves 27-9 the rest of the way for a 67-50 win Saturday afternoon.
"They came to play a little bit and obviously shot it better than they did last night, and they were a little comfortable early," stated veteran Van Wert David Froelich.
FORT WAYNE—They played dead-even with the highest-scoring team in the state—15 lead changes, 10 ties, and zero backdowns.
They forced that team into its first overtime of what could become a historic season.
They even caused that go-go team to stall a while in the fourth quarter.
They did not, however, get a victory.
FORT WAYNE—Bellmont held North Side scoreless for the first six and a half minutes of its girls varsity basketball game Thursday night at the By Hey Arena and came away with an easy 56-33 non-conference triumph to raise its record to 7-6 on the season.
Bellmont had run up a 13-0 advantage before the Redskins could score and the closest North Side could ever get after that was nine at 19-10.
MONROE—Last season's Adams Central defeat of Bellmont was the first in about 13 years and last night's AC defeat of Bluffton seems to have covered about the same duration.
The emotional 59-54 victory by the Flying Jets over the Tigers in the ACAC Tourney came after eight lead changes and six ties and put Central into tonight's second semifinal game around 6:30 p.m. in the Fort Wayne Memorial Coliseum against Indiana's number one scoring team: Leo.
MONROE—It may be hard to believe that the most electrifying moment in an overtime game came not at the end of either regulation or OT, but at the close of the third quarter. However, it was true at Adams Central on Wednesday night.
The Lady Jets overcame pesky, scrappy Bluffton, 57-53, in the ACAC Tourney and wound up tied with the Lady Tigers at 48 at the end of the fourth period thanks to a miracle shot for all time.
Bellmont moved from ninth in last week's Indianamat.com state wrestling poll to eighth this week, and South Adams entered the poll for the first time at No. 19.
The Braves' 3-2 showing in the "Main Event" super duals at Bellmont over the weekend helped Bellmont remain in the top 10. The Braves defeated defending state champ and then sixth-rated Mishawaka Saturday, and also knocked off No. 14 Bloomington South, which dropped out of the poll.
The Decatur Baseball Association has announced its registration dates, and all are in February.

Action in the longest running boys conference tournament in the state of Indiana will start tonight at four high school sites.
The 88th annual ACAC boys tournament and the 37th ACAC girls event will open play at Woodlan, Adams Central, Leo, and Heritage. The draw for the tournament was held back in December with South Adams picked to travel to Woodlan, Bluffton going to AC, Leo will host Southern Wells, and Garrett and Heritage will meet at the Patriots gym.
