They call him "The Matrix," but he's still known in Decatur as Evan DeLong, a graduate of Bellmont High School in 2007.
DeLong, 24, now of Fort Wayne, is in his fourth year as a professional fighter in mixed martial arts (MMA), with a pro record of 9-6 and a brief amateur record of 10-3.

It looked like it was going to be one of those games where offense cost a hefty premium after the first quarter when the score was 6-4 in favor of the Squaws, and after a second quarter surge by the Heritage Lady Patriots, Bellmont continued to find the basket too elusive to pull out the victory away from home on Saturday evening and fell, 36-27.
BERNE— The Starfires fought valiantly in a game that featured only six different varsity players on the floor for first year coach Ryan Cunningham as South Adams continues to struggle early in the season falling to an 0-4 record with a 52-37 defeat at the hands of Union City on Saturday night.

Bellmont football coach Larry Getts, who led Bellmont to only its second sectional crown in school history this past fall, feels that team stayed together despite a tough start, and that allowed the squad to prosper in the 3A playoffs.
"The biggest highlight was watching these kids come together as a team, seeing them believe in the invisible and make it a reality. The 2011 team demonstrated time and again what it means to play for the guy next to you," said Getts, who took over a program in a bit of disaray.

The IHSAA's decision to drop the Team State Wrestling Tournament following this season is a huge disappointment to 24-year Bellmont coach Brent Faurote, while Adams Central coach Doug Schultz and South Adams mentor Eric Myers have different takes.
The Braves have earned 14 (out of 16) Team State Finals berths and have earned multiple placements in the meet, and have beaten very strong Yorktown teams in two of the past three years. No other team has had as many Team State entries as Bellmont.
FORT WAYNE— The Squaws traveled to Bishop Dwenger seeking their first win last night as they faced the Saints in their third contest the year, and they fell short by a 54-46 count.
Bellmont played up and down with Dwenger for most of the game, but never really found the lead except for early in the first quarter. The game was, in fact, tied at 12 after the first frame.

The Lady Warriors of Woodlan outscored the Squaws of Bellmont 14-6 in the fourth quarter to come back and win at home in girls basketball action on Saturday night, 46-40.
The game, which was originally scheduled for Friday night, was postponed until Saturday because of the Braves' regional game in West Lafayette.
OSSIAN—Adams County teams won seven of the 11 events staged at the annual Norwell Girls Swim Invitational Saturday but the team score was won by Jay County which easily outdistanced second place Bellmont 250-195.5.
South Adams swept four blue ribbons but was fifth out of the nine teams. The Squaws had two first place finishes while Adams Central took one. In the team race, Oak Hill was third with 184.5, followed by Columbia City 169, South Adams 140, Bishop Dwenger 116, Bluffton 92, Norwell 86, and Adams Central 67.

When Marian University football coach Ted Karras Jr. came to Bellmont in the spring of 2009 to sign a host of players from the 2008 BHS state championship team, he had a promise.
