Three of the four Bellmont 1600 relay runner set season's bests, including a sizzling 59.7 leg by lead runner Alexis Harvey, as the Squaws held off a strong Carroll group for the victory Tuesday at the BHS oval, and they did it with the fastest recorded time in the history of the Squaws track program.
But it wasn't a record.
DEFIANCE, Oh — Senior second baseman Ian Sanders (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont H.S.) collected three hits and broke the Franklin College career record in that stat department in the second game of Saturday's Heartland Conference baseball doubleheader at Defiance.
MONROE—Adams Central cashed in a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning Monday evening to send their visitors from Steuben County home early and captured a 12-2 win over Fremont in non-conference play.
The Jets, now 8-1 on the season, scored in every at bat starting off with four in the first and three more in the second. They added a single tally in the third and got two in the fourth and fifth to win by the 10-run mercy rule.
Bellmont's girls' varsity tennis team went to 5-3 on Monday with a rain-shortened 3-1 win over Bluffton, which is 3-5.
The Squaw wins were by Alysha Helmrich at No. 3 singles, 6-1 and 6-0, over Amanda Stone and by both doubles units: Madeline Albert and Abby Stimpson, 6-0 and 6-1, over Annessa Reiff and Allison Williams in No. 1 action, plus Andrea Fruchte and Shelby Kiess by 6-2 and 7-6 (7-1) over Hannah Gilliam and Gina Eisenhut in No. 2 doubles.
Bellmont ripped six home runs, including two each by Gunnar Cale and Brian Hakes, and scored 20 runs on 32 hits in an 11-3, 9-4 twin bill sweep of Whitko Saturday at the BHS field.
In the opener Cale and Hakes both slugged two-run home runs to right field in the bottom of the sixth. Ben Fullenkamp led off the fifth with a homer over the scoreboard in right field.
MONROE — A first place finish in the 1,600 meter relay by the Adams Central boys track team Friday night allowed the Jets to take a narrow 137-134 win over Fremont in the annual Adams Central Track Invitational.
