Liechty posts state finals time for SA

    TERRE HAUTE—South Adams junior Evan Liechty participated for the Starfires as an individual runner in the IHSAA boys state finals in cross country Saturday and finished 69th overall out of a field of  196 harriers.
    Liechty posted a time of 16:34.3.

SA soccer girls receive All-Conference award

    The Lady Starfires' soccer team received their all-conference selections this last week for the ACAC and came away with two players on the first team and three on the second team.
    Making the first team squad was senior Brianna Nevil and junior Rachel Simon for the Stars. The Leo Lions placed five members of their squad on the first team to lead the conference, while Heritage placed four, and the Garrett Railroaders and Woodlan Warriors each added a player to round out the squad.

County schools look to advance in sectional action

    The second round of high school football sectionals kicks off tonight with games at 7 p.m. or 7:30 p.m.
    The three Adams County schools are all still in the running for their respective sectionals and would like to ask for continued support from their local fan base.
    The Braves will be at home this evening with a tough Yorktown squad who sit at 6-4. Should the Braves move on tonight, it will be a coin flip between two 8-2 teams, Mississinewa and Western, both are the sectional favorites over the Braves.

Braves look to take down upstart Yorkies

    Coming off an outstanding offensive performance at Blackford, Bellmont will be back at Bob Worthman Stadium Friday night in round two of the 3A football playoffs as they take on 6-4 Yorktown Tigers, who are fresh off of their 38-24 upset win over sectional favorite Eastbrook.
    "Every time you get to the next round of competition it's good," stated first-year BHS coach Larry Getts.

Decatur T-Birds parade fundraiser set

    The Decatur T-Birds baseball squad have one goal in mind: get to Cooperstown in 2013.
    They plan on getting there with fund raisers at their booth on Halloween night during the Callithumpian parade.
    T-Birds manager John Macklin is encouraging the public to stop by the booth for “walking tacos” and drinks all night Monday to help the boys get to the Baseball Hall of Fame next year.

Squaws state-repeat effort ends in regionals

    Though a scrappy Bellmont squad fought to leads late in both the first and third games against No. 1 Yorktown Tuesday, the visitors prevailed in the 3A Volleyball Regional with a 3-0 sweep, knocking out the defending state champion Squaws 25-21, 25-11 and 26-24.
    "You have to give credit to them, they came into a hostile environment they played as they were supposed to. That's why they're No. 1," stated Bellmont coach Craig Krull.

Starfires football preview

    The Starfires of South Adams look to advance to the sectional finals for the first time since 2006 on Friday as they take on the Union City Indians on their home turf.
    The records are the same; 9-1. The rankings are not. According to the coaches poll, South Adams is the fourth best team in 1A football this week, while Union City is perched just outside of the top ten. Both are coming off of great wins (SA over Monroe Central 46-0, Union City over Wes-Del 42-20).

Quinn earns Academic All-State

    Mikala Quinn, a senior at Bellmont High School, received the Academic All-State award at the Squaws' soccer banquet last week for her efforts both on the field and in the classroom.
    Quinn has participated in three sports as a Bellmont Squaw including soccer, softball and basketball.
    Mikala has started all four years in varsity soccer, dressed varsity four years for softball and has been a starter for three years, and has dressed varsity for basketball for the last two years.

BMS student athletes recognized

    This month's Bellmont Middle School athletes were honored for their performances on and off the field. Lindsey Manley, Alexis Martinez, Conner Bussel, Riley Stetler, Jordan Amacker, Bailey Beery, and Ashten Worth were all honored.
    The winners of the monthly award also received lunch at the Back 40 Junction in Decatur with their coaches.

Squaws claim 7th straight spike title

    OSSIAN — Bellmont overcame a spat of first game blahs, then outscored Eastbrook 16-3 to close out game one at Norwell Saturday afternoon en route to a 28th sectional volleyball championship.
    The Squaws, now 29-5, swept Heritage 3-0 in the semis and then did the same to the Panthers, 25-16, 25-17, and 25-10 to win their seventh straight sectional crown under Coach Craig Krull.
