Gerald “Jerry” G. Knittle, 35, Decatur, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2014. Jerry was born in Decatur Dec. 12, 1978, to Gerald D. and Bonnie L. (Whittenbarger) Knittle.
Among survivors are his parents, Gerald and Bonnie Knittle of Decatur; and numerous aunts and uncles and their families.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home, with Pastor Carol Tumbleson Evans officiating. Burial will be in Decatur Cemetery.
Ruth E. Crosby, 84, of Decatur, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, at Adams Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Fort Wayne Thursday, April 10, 1930, to the late Walter F. David and Dora M. (Hanke) David. She married Charles F. Crosby in Fort Wayne April 18, 1953; he survives.
Ruth was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church-Fuelling and a longtime member of the choir. She retired in 1990 from Central Soya after 25 years of service.
Daniel May Jr., 61, Berne, died at 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014, at his residence. He was born in Jay County Sunday, April 19, 1953, to Daniel and Marjorie May.
Daniel worked at Smith Brothers of Berne for 41 years. He was a graduate of South Adams High School and enjoyed watching movies, sports and listening to music.
Howard F. Steiner, 90, Berne, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014, at Swiss Village Retirement Community. He was born in Adams County Oct. 20, 1923, to the late Homer and Magealena (Zurcher) Steiner. On November 19, 1949, he married Roselle Haines and after 54 years together she passed away on Dec.12, 2003.
He was a self-employed farmer and worked at Berne Furniture for 25 years. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1945- 47.
Howard Steiner, 90, died Wednesday. Arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home.
Betty Bixler, 90, Geneva, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014, at Woodcrest in Decatur.
She was born in Huntington, Oct. 26, 1923, to the late Marion O. and Mildred Smith. She married Herman J. Bixler on Nov. 30, 1947, in Geneva; he preceded her in death.
Thomas H. Carpenter, 70, Decatur, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014, at Lutheran Hospital. He was born to Juanita (Hitchcock) Carpenter on July 19, 1944. He married his wife of 51 years, Diane F. (Black) Carpenter, March 29, 1963; she survives.
Thomas was a 1963 graduate of Decatur High School. He was employed by Decatur Casting and retired after 38 years of service.
Thaddeus Neunam DeWolf, 95, Berne, died Sept. 15, 2014, at Swiss Village.
Survivors include a son, Phillip P. (Mary Jo) DeWolf of Mt. Carmel, Ill.; daughter, Marcia (James) Bosek of Essex Junction, Vt.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law Elsie DeWolf of Lee’s Summit, Mo.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Cross Community Church, with Pastor Craig Yoder officiating. Burial is in MRE Cemetery, Berne.
John Jasper Hough, 76, Bryant, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014, at his residence.
John is survived by his two daughters, Hulda (Roger) Harter of Montpelier and Regina (Keith) Huey of Geneva; two sons, Randy (Rebecca) Hough of Geneva and Earl (Lesley) Hough of Berne; sister, Caroline Jones of Bryant; two brothers, Lonnie (Carolyn) Hough of Indianapolis and Tom (Marilyn) Hough of Geneva; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Ted Ruble, 71, Decatur, died on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014, at his residence. He was born Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1943, to the late Romey Ruble and Treva (Barkley) Ruble. He married Dorothy E. Schlemmer on Oct. 14, 1961, in Zion Lutheran Church in Decatur; she survives.
Ted was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he served as a past elder and deacon. He was a lifelong farmer and was a self-employed businessman with his family in machinery and automotive sales.
