Fundraiser is on tap here Friday

    Andy's Coney Bar will hold a fundraiser from 5-9 p.m. this Friday at the Knights of Columbus Pavilion, 1703 High St., Decatur.
    Andy's —a new business in Decatur to hopefully open the first of the year — will be serving coney dogs, chili and old-fashioned root beer on Friday. Also planned, organizers said, are sales of cotton candy, children's activities, a silent auction, raffles and more.

BHS, Trine deal set up

    Officials from Trine University Middle College have announced a partnership with North Adams Community Schools that will expand the college's concurrent enrollment program and will allow BHS students to take pre-calculus (MA 123) classes for college credit at Trine.
    Bellmont pre-calculus teachers Michael Macke and Kent Arnold will serve as Trine adjunct professors, according to an announcement from the Angola school.

Lengerich gains top award from DAR

    Clayton Lengerich, a senior at Adams Central High School and president of his class all four years, is the 2010 winner of the annual Adams County Good Citizen award presented by the Antoine Rivarre Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
    The runnersup were seniors from Bellmont High School, Joe Baker, and from South Adams High School, Sam Amstutz.
    Students who enter the contest are judged on dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. Scoring is computed as follows:

Project at AC on the move

    "Moving along very well" and "ahead of or on schedule" were the words used at the November meeting of the school board to describe Adams Central School's construction and renovation project.
    The speaker was former board member Barry Ehinger, who now oversees the project as the board's hired representative. Weigand Construction of Fort Wayne is the prime contractor on the design-build job.

Route 5 postal carrier honored for 30 years

    For more than 30 years, Sue Eichhorn has been a mail carrier at the Decatur Post Office, including the past 26 years on rural route five.
    She was recently honored by the U.S. Postal Service for achieving that milestone. A certificate signed by E. Lynn Smith, the manager of the Fort Wayne district of the USPS, congratulated Eichhorn for her service and added, "Over the years, there have been many changes and improvements in the postal service. Your contribution assisted in making these changes possible."

Mayer offers praise, criticism

    Although delivered calmly, the Veterans' Day address by Hank Mayer, a retired lieutenant-colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps, minced no words as he delivered numerous jabs in several directions.
    More than 100 people attended the downtown ceremony on Madison St. in front of American Legion Post 43.

T-bird still flying, hits 15,500 mark

    It's formally known as TNRD80001011.
    That's the 18,000th Formula boat built since 1989 at the Thunderbird Products plant in Decatur: a 35-foot, twin-engine craft destined to be used on The Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. It has a top speed of 55 mph.

Six arrested in drug bust; seek four more

    The second drug interdiction operation in eight months in Decatur was aimed today at eight adults and two juveniles, charged with dealing in marijuana, cocaine, prescription pain medicine, and mushrooms. The operation is entitled "Operation Fall Harvest."
    The previous drug bust this year was  held in March and netted 17 people.

Wind-farm options given to the North Adams board

    North Adams school officials were just checking to see which way the wind is blowing. And presently it's pretty calm out there.
    School board members listened Tuesday to a sales pitch seeking the local school district's investment in a statewide wind farm project. And they did so armed in advance with a legal opinion from state attorneys that such investments are not currently permissible.

AC holds annual tribute to veterans

    Sixty years after the Korean War began in 1950, between 2,000 and 3,000 people gathered at Adams Central School in Monroe on Tuesday for AC's annual tribute to Veterans' Day, an event that spotlighted local veterans of the Korean conflict.
