State Rep. Matt Lehman on Saturday morning told a crowd comprised mostly of organized labor members that he will vote against a proposal to allow Hoosiers to determine at the ballot box the fate of a contentious right-to-work bill now being debated in the Indiana General Assembly.
The response from union supporters was perhaps summed up best by Decatur resident Daniel Jaurigue, a member of carpenters' union Local 232, who said: "We are watching how you vote, and we're going to fire you."
Gerald M. (Jerry) Walker of Berne has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Adams County Recorder.
He is the third GOP candidate to announce for Recorder, joining Deb Stimpson and Jim Voglewede, both of Decatur, in the field.
Walker is currently serving as Monroe Township Trustee and previously had served as township trustee/assessor. He is employed with Yager Furniture of Berne, is pastor of Landmark Baptist Church, New Haven, and also serves on the Berne Tree Board.
INDIANAPOLIS — During session Thursday, the Indiana House of Representatives recognized a resolution introduced by Rep. Matt Lehman, R-Berne, to honor students from South Adams High School for their involvement with the charity organization Dots in Blue Water.
Winter reared its ugly head in Decatur and Adams County overnight, with roaring winds causing the most problems.
County roads were slick and hazardous due to blowing snow. In Decatur, some streets were snow-covered and others were nearly clear — depending upon which way the snow was blowing.
The area continued under a winter weather advisory.
Hopes for a new city-county building in Decatur and a move out of the current superior court building seemed to fade away on Thursday with the unseasonable weather being experienced here earlier this week.
It's been said all along that without everyone on board, a new city-county building in Decatur likely wouldn't happen.
At Thursday's meeting attended by a number of city and county officials, two of the three Adams County commissioners expressed opposition, but one offered a possible alternative.
Commissioner Doug Bauman said the antiquated superior court building "needs work beyond what we can afford to fix."
Officials at North Adams Community Schools are looking into the "renovation or replacement" of facilities at Bob Worthman Stadium, according to a report given to school board members Tuesday.
The Decatur area was under a winter weather advisory this morning, with some slight snow accumulation expected today and one to three inches tonight. The other half of the one-two punch is much colder temperatures.
The National Weather Service says an approaching winter storm could drop more than a foot of snow on far northern Indiana and bring wind-whipped blowing and drifting snow, The Associated Press reported.
Doug Bauman of rural Geneva has formally announced his candidacy for a new term as Adams County Commissioner, District Three, on the 2012 Republican ticket.
Bauman said his major goal for the upcoming term is to keep Adams County financially sound and yet still provide services to the citizens as has been done in the past.
For the second consecutive year, North Adams Community Schools is offering an incentive for teachers to make retirement plans in the immediate future.
The school district is offering incentives of up to $15,000 in cash or tax-deferred accounts to a maximum of 10 and a minimum of five North Adams teachers who agree by to retire at the end of the 2011-2012 school year. The deadline for making that decision is only weeks away.
