Decker home; lost both legs saving kids

    SELLERSBURG, Ind. (AP) — A southern Indiana woman who lost parts of both legs while protecting her two children from a tornado is home.
    Stephanie Decker of Henryville was released from a southern Indiana rehabilitation hospital on Monday.
    The 36-year-old woman tells The Courier-Journal said she was excited to go home and not remain stuck in a bed.

The day the roof caved in

    Those of us who were here 10 years ago today haven't forgotten it. In fact, 10 years later, the memories remain quite vivid.
    Most of us heard a loud cracking noise on that Tuesday, March 27, of 2002 and there were jokes about newsprint rolling across the upstairs, even though we long ago lost our printing press. Someone even said something about the roof.

Berne to share siren upgrade costs

    Berne City Council on Monday agreed to pay $730 as its share of the cost to upgrade three weather sirens to handle new government-mandated frequencies.

Bobo tile dispute begins to heat up

    In response to claims made against him by neighbor Richard Lambert, Bobo resident Larry Passwaters addressed the Adams County Commissioners on Monday regarding continuing issues with drainage in the Bobo area.
    On February 27, Lambert met with commissioners and stated that his neighbor, Passwaters, allegedly had a broken tile on his property which was creating some minor flooding on his property.

Cover up! Frost possible tonight

    Back to normal ... with a little frost thrown in.
    The National Weather Service says Decatur and Adams County can expectd some patchy frost after 10 tonight as temperatures return to normal.
    That's bad news for plants that have already bloomed due to the recent spate of unusually warm weather.
    Experts say major damage is possible for for plants that have already started to bloom this season. In a normal year, trees and plants don't bud until around April or May.

Cleanup is no fun

    Decatur firefighters and other city employees were handed the less-than-pleasant task of cleaning up chicken parts that spilled from a truck onto 13th St. near Adams St. around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
    The smelly cleanup took nearly an hour.
    The driver of the truck did not stop and was the subject of a lengthy search. Police said the driver may not have been aware of the spill.
    A fire truck was used to wash down the street.

Hebble reaches No. 100

    This is one of thousands of stories of American Red Cross Apheresis donors, but this story is about my friend Jon Hebble as he nears his 100th apheresis donation milestone.
    When asked why he faithfully donates platelets every two weeks at the Fort Wayne ARC Blood center, he sort of rolls his eyes and simply responds, “Because...”

Spring-break activities set for next week

    The "family friendly" activities which proved to be so popular during spring break last year are returning, Chris Krull of the sponsoring city-county parks and recreation department informed city council at its meeting Tuesday night.
    County schools will be on spring break starting with the dismissal of classes this Friday and all manner of activities are planned for five consecutive days next week, Monday through Friday.

Indiana Catholic schools end bonuses for referrals

    SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Catholic Church officials in northern Indiana have suspended programs in which some parochial schools offered monetary incentives to recruit students.
    South Bend Community Schools officials have questioned whether it was proper for a Catholic school receiving money from the state’s private school voucher program to also pitch bonuses to those who referred it new students.
