Confusion reigns, but Berne in compliance

    Berne City Council members took steps on Monday evening to be in compliance with a new state law.
    Even if they weren't sure exactly what the law requires. Or what it means? Or why it's necessary. Or how it's going to affect the city going forward.

Early voting set to begin next Monday

    Adams County Clerk Gayla Reinhart has announced that early voting for the November 8 election will run from Monday, October 31, to Saturday, November 5, and on Monday, November 7, in the first floor hallway of the Adams County Courthouse in downtown Decatur.
    Voting times will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from October 31 through Friday, November 4; and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, November 5, and Monday, November 7.

Norwell senior jailed after alleged threat

    A rural Craigville youth who is a senior at Norwell High School was jailed last Friday as the result of alleged incidents at Norwell the day before. The incidents included a police chase that attained speeds of over 100 mph in Wells County and ended with a taser device being used on the suspect.
    Jonathon Stickney, 18, was lodged in the Wells County Jail under $11,000 bond on charges of intimidation, resisting law enforcement, and operating a vehicle recklessly.

Campaign seeks funds to preserve city depot

    "Save the Seventh St. Train Depot."
    A fund using that title has been created by the Adams County Community Foundation (ACCF) to save the former Pennsylvania Railroad depot between Seventh and Eight Sts., near Monroe and Madison Sts. The goal is to raise $35,000 as quickly as possible, officials said.
    The city-owned depot is situated beside the Chicago, Fort Wayne, and Eastern Railroad tracks.

Chandler’s attorney seeking new trial

    CLEARWATER, Fla. – The rights of an inmate convicted of killing a Willshire, Ohio, family in 1989 were violated at his trial and a new jury should be seated to decide whether he should live or die, an attorney argued in an appeals hearing Friday.
    Oba Chandler, 65, is scheduled to die by lethal injection Nov. 15. He listened by phone from his cell on death row and said little as his attorney, Baya Harrison III, mounted what he said would be one of the final attempts to spare his client’s life.

Area bands capture state trips; AC misses

    The Adams Central High School marching band turned in its best performance of the year at the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Semi-State competition at Frankllin High School. on Saturday, but it wasn't enough to propel the Squadron of Sound into this week's State Finals.
    Norwell, Bluffton and Woodlan bands were among the state qualifiers, the former in Class C and the latter two in Class D. The AC band competed in Class D.

Second draft of Heritage plans offered EA board

    The first of several proposed construction plans within the East Allen County Schools District, involving Woodlan Junior-Senior High School, will move ahead after a vote by the school board this week.
    At a cost of almost $11 million, the Woodlan plan is large enough to be subject to a remonstrance by the taxpayers and voters in the East Allen district. The deadline to file a remonstrance is next Monday, October 24.

BHS grad Jackson named ISP detective

    Paul E. Whitesell, superintendent of the Indiana State Police, has announced the re-assignment of a trooper from the Fort Wayne post to the rank of detective.
    Trooper Bobby D. Jackson, 38, has been re-assigned to detective and transferred to the Criminal Investigation Division, where he will assume investigative duties in Adams and Jay Counties.

Trio of Berne businesses offer reward

    A $1,000 reward is being offered by three Berne businesses for information about burglaries which occurred at their businesses overnight Monday.
    The firms are State Farm Insurance, Sport Form, and Bixler Insurance.
    Small amounts of money were taken from the State Farm and Sport Form sites and there was an unsuccessful attempt to enter a safe at the Bixler site, but nothing was stolen.

AC band set to go for state berth

    The Adams Central High School band band is now one of the top 20 Class D bands in the state, having received a “Gold” rating and placing in the top 10 bands (out of 18) in last weekend’s Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Class D Regional competition.
    The stakes are even higher this Saturday during the Semi-State contest at Franklin Community High School, near Greenwood.
