Early voting begins April 9

    Adams County Clerk Gayla Reinhart has announced that early voting hours for the 2012 May primaries will be observed from Monday, April 9 through Friday, May 4, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on weekdays.
    Reinhart also said there will be early voting hours on Monday, May 7, from 8 a.m.-noon, with two Saturday dates, April 28 and May 5, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
    All primary voting will be held in the hallway of the courthouse.

Challenge series starts April 28

    The Adams County Community Foundation's 5K Run-Walk Challenge will begin its third season on April 28 with the Run Over Violence at Adams Memorial Hospital, starting at 9 a.m. 
    The 2012 series will feature nine races (participants must complete seven to qualify for challenge awards):
    • Run Over Violence on Saturday, April 28 in Decatur.,
    • CG Sports  - Run with Endurance 5K at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 12 in Decatur.

State’s population to grow mostly in Indy-Carmel area

    BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana’s population will grow by 1 million to 7.48 million people by 2050 with most of the growth occurring in the Indianapolis-Carmel metropolitan area, according to projections from the Indiana Business Research Center.
    Besides becoming much more urban than rural, the state will continue to grow grayer, with aging baby boomers increasing the over-65 share of the state population to 20 percent compared to 13 percent in 2010, according to the center based at Indiana University.

Hi-Way Hatchery aids egg donation

    FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Some Indiana farmers have made a big donation to Fort Wayne’s Food Bank.
    WANE-TV reports (http://bit.ly/Hpp8nO) Midwest Poultry Services and Berne Hi-Way Hatchery donated more than 140,000 eggs to the agency on Wednesday.

Hospital drops controversial billing method

    A method of billing at the Adams Memorial Hospital for non-Medicare patients will be changed after hospital officials received a legal opinion from Indianapolis telling them it would be legal to do so.
    Last year, the hospital began charging Medicare and non-Medicare patients who sought care from the offices of Dr. David Coats, Dr. Crystal Jencks, and Dr. Jessamine Hippensteel two separate fees, one of which was for professional services, and the second for a facility charge.

Gas prices at record high here

    Gasoline prices reached what is believed to be an all-time high in Decatur on Wednesday, when prices jumped some 30 cents a gallon to $4.15 and $4.16.
    Similar prices were seen in Fort Wayne.    
    Meanwhile, most experts expect higher prices as we move toward the peak summer driving season.    
    Prices rose to a nationwide average of $3.90 per gallon on Monday, having gone up 17 cents so far this month.

Decker home; lost both legs saving kids

    SELLERSBURG, Ind. (AP) — A southern Indiana woman who lost parts of both legs while protecting her two children from a tornado is home.
    Stephanie Decker of Henryville was released from a southern Indiana rehabilitation hospital on Monday.
    The 36-year-old woman tells The Courier-Journal said she was excited to go home and not remain stuck in a bed.

The day the roof caved in

    Those of us who were here 10 years ago today haven't forgotten it. In fact, 10 years later, the memories remain quite vivid.
    Most of us heard a loud cracking noise on that Tuesday, March 27, of 2002 and there were jokes about newsprint rolling across the upstairs, even though we long ago lost our printing press. Someone even said something about the roof.
