Don’t burn outdoors, chief urges

    Due to the dry conditions evident in much of Adams County, Decatur Fire Chief Les Marckel is urging the public to use common sense by not burning anything outdoors.
    The county does not have a no-burning order in effect, Marckel said, but everyone should avoid starting outside fires at this time.

Sheriff given the okay to hire a new deputy

    Due to the retirement on July 31 of Terry Nevil, who served as a deputy sheriff for some 32 years, and pending surgery for another deputy, Jody Mawhorr, Sheriff Shane Rekeweg on Monday received permission from the Adams County Commissioners to hire a full-time deputy.

Tickets for ‘Cuties’ at the Chamber

    Tickets for the play "Cuties of Decatur," which will have four performances during the 175th anniversary celebration of the City of Decatur this month, are available through the Decatur Chamber of Commerce, 125 E. Monroe St.
    Tickets are $8 for the shows at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 17; 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 18; and 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, in the cafetorium of Bellmont Middle School.

Officials say river algae is no threat

    What's that stuff in the St. Marys River?
    According to Decatur Fire Chief Les Marckel, who led the local investigation on Friday into a brownish-looking discoloration in the water at Pleasant Mills, the material is only algae that built up in area streams and ditches due to stagnation during a long dry spell, then got washed into the river by recent rain that fell in Ohio.

Pike changes plans for Schafer Building

    Remember the project announced some four years ago to convert the former Schafer Building, at First and Madison Sts. in downtown Decatur, into a complex of 26 condominiums?
    Now, the owner of that structure, Robert J. Pike of New Richmond, Wisconsin, says he still plans to create the condos, but instead of offering them to the public at-large, he plans to let United States military veterans live there.

    Three "yes" votes, one abstention, and one absence on Thursday night at a special meeting of the North Adams school board saw a two-year contract with the North Adams Teachers' Association (NATA) approved.

Swiss Days off to a hot start

    The 40th Swiss Days festival in Berne kicked off its three-day run on Thursday, accompanied by the sweltering heat which has become all too familiar to county residents throughout the month.
    While a handful of festival events were held throughout the day, official opening ceremonies were held at 6 p.m. The opener was highlighted by speeches welcoming a trio of dignitaries from a community in Switzerland with which Berne is attempting to form a Sister City relationship.

First Bank of Berne plans purchase of AmericanTrust

    Officials of First Bank of Berne (FBB) and Peru-based AmericanTrust Federal Savings Bank (ATFSB) have announced that, subject to regulatory approvals, the Berne bank will take over all assets, deposits, and properties of ATFSB late this year.
    First Bank of Berne, which has $426 million in assets, plans to add ATFSB's $83 million in assets and $84 million in deposits.
    ATFSB is based in Peru and has branches in Kokomo and Bunker Hill.
