Students and stats come to council

May 16, 2012

    Students and statistics were on the agenda for Decatur City Council on Tuesday night, thanks to the Bellmont High School statistics class.
    Spurred by a meeting with Mayor John Schultz and local resident Larry Isch last January, the 14 students in Kent Arnold's class surveyed students in the fifth through 12 grades at Bellmont middle and high schools.

Lehman hails right-to-work

    State Rep. Matt Lehman, R-Berne, wrapped up the Decatur Chamber of Commerce's monthly speaker series for the year on Monday with an overview of the Indiana General Assembly's recent legislative session.
    Speaking at Woodcrest retirement community, Lehman said state lawmakers tackled some tough issues this session, "and when all was said and done ... I think we did some things that are very good for the state of Indiana."

Berne sets Lehman Park regulations

    Despite a last-minute revision deemed necessary to comply with state regulations governing the possession of firearms in public spaces, Berne City Council on Monday adopted an ordinance outlining permissible conduct in the city's Lehman Park.

    INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Indiana diocese asked a federal court on Monday to reject a lawsuit by a former parochial school teacher who claims she was fired for violating Roman Catholic doctrine by using in vitro fertilization to try to get pregnant.

Bellmont pink prom has a special guest

    Bellmont High School held a pink prom at the Botanical Gardens in Fort Wayne on Saturday night — with a special guest.
    In honor of a classmate's mother who is fighting breast cancer, numerous students were sporting pink, the boys wearing pink vests and, in some cases, pink ties.

Lawson mending fences

    Six weeks into her position job as Indiana's Secretary of State, Connie Lawson is fully aware of the public relations job that lies ahead of her. There are fences to be mended and public relationships and trust to be restored in the office she now holds.
    Lawson was appointed to her new position by Gov. Mitch Daniels on March 16 to succeed fellow Republican Charlie White, who was removed for office after his conviction on a charge of voter fraud.

Motor Sports Festival slated June 15

    The 12th annual Motor Sports Festival will be presented in downtown Decatur on Friday June 15, it has been announced by the sponsoring Chamber of Comerce.
      Registration will begin at 4 p.m. and the show will continue until 9p.m.
    Several food vendors will have food available for sale. MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) will be returning with their popular spiral fries and Common Ground Church will be serving hamburgers, hotdogs and sloppy Joes, the announcement said.

Milk truck rolls over on 224

     A semi hauling 6,000 gallons of milk rolled over at the intersection of US 224 and 600 E around 12:30 this morning.
    No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
    No milk spilled out of the truck from Eagle Transport Group of Goshen. According to an Adams County sheriff at the scene, another milk truck was called in to transfer the milk which was not contaminated in the accident.
    The driver was not injured.

Clothe-A-Kid drive is gearing up

    Love INC (Love In the Name of Christ) has announced the beginning of the annual Clothe-A-Kid for School campaign.
    Children participating in the free or reduced-price lunch program in Adams County, and who will be at least four years old and in grades pre-kindergarten through eighth at the start of the 2012-13 school year, are eligible for this program.
    "The purpose of this project is to send needy children back to school with a brand new set of clothes," said Executive Director Claudia Karges.
