Stab victim a woman

June 20, 2012

    Decatur police today released the name of the individual involving in the stabbing incident early Sunday morning in the 200 block of N. 17th Street.
    Police Chief Ken Ketzler said Shelby Affolder, 20, heard a knock on the front door of her apartment and went to answer it around 12:25 a.m. After opening it, a man appeared, stabbed Affolder in the abdomen with a knife and then fled.

Area festivals set to open this week

    Two area festivals have openings scheduled this week.
    Hoagland Days kicks off Thursday and Willshire (Ohio) Days will begin Friday. Both are slated for three-day runs.
    And in Decatur, the annual Relay for Life gets under way Saturday and continues into Sunday/.

County institutes a burning ban

    Some summer activities may be taking a hit this year as there now is an open burning ban in Adams County until further notice.
    The Adams County Commissioners passed a resolution Monday prohibiting open burning due to severe drought conditions.
    Until further notice, the following types of burning are banned throughout the county:
    • Campfires and other recreational fires, unless enclosed in a fire ring at least 23 inches across and 10 inches is deep

Blood drive on Zurcher's two-day list

    Zurcher’s Best-One in Monroe will hold its annual Customer Appreciation and American Red Cross Blood Drive event this Friday and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.
    "Celebrating this event each year gives Zurcher’s the opportunity to express our gratitude and thanks to the local community for their continued patronage throughout the year," a news release said.

Stabbing is probed by police

    Decatur police are continuing their investigation into an alleged stabbing that occurred early Sunday morning.
    Police were dispatched to the 200 block of N. 17th Street at 12:25 a.m. Sunday in regards to a battery situation with a possible stabbing, according to a department spokesman.

County’s jobless rate goes up a bit

    Unemployment in Adams County climbed slightly during May to 7.3 percent — up from a four-year low of 7.0 percent one month earlier but still a half percent below readings from May of 2011.
    After starting 2012 with a jobless rate of 8.5 percent, Adams County saw four consecutive months of decline in unemployment figures prior to the release of May's statistics.

New notification system set for SA

    Myra Moore, South Adams Schools' technology director, announced at this week's board of education meeting that the school plans to use a new notification system during the 2012-13 school year. The new system has more features and will cost three cents more per student than the previous system.

United Way’s annual bus stuff scheduled June 20

June 15, 2012

    United Way of Adams County has announced that the third annual Stuff-a-Bus event will be held on Wednesday, June 20, with the local chapter once again collecting food and other supplies for community food banks.
    There are still many families in Adams County who are in need of help and the area food banks are struggling to maintain supplies, according to a United Way representative.
    Busses will be parked from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. at four locations in Adams County:

ACentral evaluations on RISE

    In an effort to ensure the staff at Adams Central continues to strive to give students their best efforts, the AC Board of Education, at its meeting this week, adopted a new system of evaluating teachers.
    Superintendent Mike Pettibone said that Indiana law mandates teacher evaluations and under this new system, RISE, he feels teachers and principals alike will benefit from the more detailed process.

Golden Meadows auction Saturday

    Golden Meadows resident Joyce Overly poses in accompanying photo with a small sampling of items that will be up for auction on Saturday during the 18th annual benefit for the Special Needs Resident Fund.
    Inspection of merchandise will begin at 9 a.m., and the food tent will begin serving at 9:30 a.m.
    The auction will start at 10.
    Golden Meadows is located south of Decatur on CR 200E, a short distance off old US 33, now Mercer Ave. Extended.
