Hospital’s annual health fair scheduled in Berne

    The annual Autumn Health Fair will once again be offered by the Adams Memorial Hospital (AMH) at the South Adams Senior Center in Berne on Friday, November 2, from 7-10 a.m.
    The health fair will allow people of all ages to receive a variety of lab tests and a flu shot as well as a chance to review educational booths and displays, an announcemente said.

Visited doc... on horseback

    Leslie Fender had a doctor's appointment. Just your routine post-surgery evaluation. But his route, and method, of keeping that appointment have been anything but routine.
    Most patients likely would have made the trip from Texas to Royal Oak, Michigan, by plane. Or even by car. Few would have kept that appointment by horseback.
    "But what fun would that be?" asked the 54-year-old Fender as he plodded on horseback down a 13th Street sidewalk in Decatur Monday morning.

Driver is said critical

    A Decatur woman is listed in critical condition this morning at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne following a single-vehicle mishap at 7:30 p.m. Monday. In another incident, a woman was struck by a driver later cited for driving while intoxicated.
    In the 7:30 mishap, a witness told the Adams County Sheriff's Department he observed a car headed southeast on Salem Road near U.S. 33 suddenly leave the road and enter a ditch; he said the vehicle flew sideways approximately 10-15 feet in the air, according to the department's report.

‘Hat,’ ‘Gate’ to exit Berne park

    Acting on recommendations contained in a recent Indiana Municipal Insurance Program report, Berne City Council on Monday voted to remove two pieces of playground equipment that have been staples at the city's Lehman Park for decades.

Allegations against Strauss revealed

    The former South Adams Elementary School principal accused of engaging in sexual contact with a student at another school, is out of custody on a $35,000 bond after appearing for an initial hearing in a Michigan City court on Friday.
    Brian Strauss, who resides in Michigan City, is charged with two counts of sexual misconduct with a minor and one count each of child solicitation and vicarious sexual gratification. The charges could bring a maximum prison sentence of 39 years.

Jobless rate in tumble

    Unemployment in Adams County hit a four-year low during September.    According to figures released Friday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, Adams County's jobless rate plummeted to 6.6 percent during September. That represents the lowest unemployment figure experienced in the county since June of 2008, when unemployment stood at 5.5 percent.
    September's unemployment rate was down .7 percent from the county's 7.3 percent reading in August.

Holdup bid at Berne CVS nets 15 years

    Seth T. Curtis, 26, Portland, who pleaded guilty to five felony charges in the August 7, 2011, attempted robbery of the CVS Pharmacy in Berne, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term this week by Adams Circuit Court by Judge Fredrick A. Schurger
    Curtis, who was shot by an off-duty officer in the CVS store, pleaded guilty to attempted armed robbery, three counts of criminal confinement, and possession of paraphernalia. A charge of unlawful possession of a syringe was dismissed.

Cattle get loose, run down highway

    The Adams County Sheriff's Department and other emergency personnel faced an unusual scenario on Thursday as well over 100 cattle were running loose just north of Decatur.
    Several sheriff's deputies, along with workers from the dairy farm from which the cattle escaped, worked late into the night chasing the cattle in an effort to return them to the pasture. As of late last night, approximately 12 were still on the loose, according to the spokesperson.

Ex-SA principal arrested

    Brian Strauss, who recently resigned as principal at South Adams Elementary School, is facing a number of charges in connection with allegations of improper conduct with a student at South Central Elementary School, LaPorte County, where he taught before coming to Adams County.
    Strauss, 40, is charged with sexual misconduct with a minor, a Class B felony; sexual misconduct with a minor, a Class C felony; child solicitation, a Class C felony; and vicarious sexual gratification, a Class D felony.

Nick’s NEW coat drive honors fallen soldier

    Members of the congregation at First Missionary Church in Berne have launched a Nick’s NEW Coat Project in honor of Nick Taylor, the South Adams graduate who was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan earlier this year as a member of the Indiana National Guard.
    The project grew out of a story, told during the soldier's funeral, in which a young Nick Taylor chose to give a fellow student in need his new coat (see related story).
