BHS play this weekend

November 29, 2012

    A large number of students are involved in the upcoming Bellmont High School production of the award-winning musical "Aida" this weekend in the Erekson Theatre.
    Senior Madison Stoppenhagen portrays Aida, described as a strong, proud and intelligent woman who is a true leader to the Nubian people, even when she is reluctant to show it.

Former Wells EMS director sentenced

    A 49-year-old Craigville woman on Monday was sentenced to nine years in prison on charges related to her theft of painkillers while serving as the former director of the Wells County Emergency Medical Service. She is expected to serve only one year behind bars, however.

    INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana’s state police chief told lawmakers Tuesday that marijuana should be legalized and taxed, prompting his own agency to quickly walk back his statement as lawmakers consider decriminalization.

Lehman Park to get a fresh look next year -- Amanda Paterson raises $10,700 for equipment

    Berne's Lehman Park will take on a fresh look next spring with the addition of new, modern playground equipment to replace outdated equipment that has been in place for decades and in some cases has been deemed unsafe.
    Profits from three annual Fall Harvest festivals, coupled with private donations, left the Berne Park Board with $19,500 in its park equipment fund earlier this month, board president and city councilman Ron Dull told city council members Monday evening.

Friday is deadline to file for SA board vacancies

    Friday is the deadline to apply for either of two vacancies on the seven-member South Adams School Board.    
    Interested applicants should mail a cover letter and resume to Arlene Amstutz, Board President, 1075 Starfire Way, Berne, IN, 46711. Candidates must live within the city limits of Berne at least one year before November 6 and be at  least 21 years of age.

Anspaugh to join hoops hall

    NEW CASTLE, Ind. (AP) — The Indiana natives who created the basketball move ‘‘Hoosiers’’ are heading into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
    Organizers announced Tuesday that ‘‘Hoosiers’’ director David Anspaugh and screenplay writer Angelo Pizzo will be inducted into the hall in March as recipients of the St. Vincent Health Silver Medal for contributions to Indiana high school basketball other than as a player or coach.

Chinese wind up their tour of city today

    In a whirlwind tour of Decatur, six Chinese officials — three of whom are involved in education — visited the city Monday and part of today, getting a closeup look at schools and industry.
    Decatur Mayor John Schultz and Economic Development Director Larry Macklin led the guests, who arrived here late Sunday night by vehicles after flying into Indianapolis.

County tech manager clarifies phone trouble

    Adams County IT Manager Landon Patterson reported on Monday that the replacement of the phone system in the Adams County E911 Dispatch Center is a problem with the phones that are used by all Adams County government offices, not with the E911 system itself.
    Patterson said the issue is that the phones used by Adams County employees, including the dispatch center, have been discontinued by the manufacturer and are now obsolete, meaning if there is a problem Patterson will be unable to fix it.

AC to become a pilot school

    Adams Central is set to become a pilot school in Computer Software Engineering (CSE) for Project Lead the Way (PLTW), beginning next year.
    Jonathon Patterson, PLTW teacher, told the AC Board of Education recently that studies show by 2018, CSE will be the number one "hot job."
    "We need to have a class that we offer computer software engineering," said Patterson.

Village Post Office operating in Preble

    Preble has become the 14th community in the  U.S. Postal Service’s Greater Indiana District with a Village Post Office (VPO).
    The VPO opened last week in the Preble Feed & Grain business in Preble. It became the 73rd VOP in the United States.
