Opening night ceremonies kick off Swiss Days

    The streets of Berne came alive Thursday as hundreds of people flocked the downtown area for the opening ceremonies of the 37th annual Swiss Days Festival being held through Saturday.
    Mayor Bill McKean opened the event under the big top at the main stage, speaking of the rich Swiss culture in Berne and thanking the Swiss Days committee and area residents who help make the event a success year after year.

   Courtney Scherer was a two-time champion at the Adams County 4-H Fair livestock auction Thursday night, netting top dollar for both her Grand Champion Adams County Born and Raised beef steer and her Grand Champion barrow. Pictured with the barrow are Nathan Scherer, Courtney Scherer and buyer Duane Franz of Beck’s Hybrids. Scherer is the daughter of Barry and Denise Scherer.

 

Piqua Road to close for two weeks

     County Engineer Tim Barkey has reported Piqua Road will be closed, beginning Monday, between C.R. 100E and Monmouth Road as Co-State Construction begins repairs to a bridge approach at Caffee Ditch. The road will be closed for approximately two weeks.

Hospital officials ‘overwhelmed’ by $500,000 gift from Evelyn Kauffman Estate

    Officials at the Adams Memorial Hospital recently received what is thought to be one of the largest donations in hospital history as the Evelyn Kauffman Estate bestowed a check for $554,243 to be used for the benefit of patients at the Decatur facility.

    The reaction by 21-month-old Katelyn Garner to spotting the cows during her first-ever visit to the 4-H Fair was one of great excitement. Katelyn is the daughter of Eric and Jodi Garner of Decatur.

Annual 4-H parade draws large crowd

     Floats and marching bands and, of course, a few politicians were part of the lineup as the annual Adams County 4-H Fair parade wound its way through Monroe Tuesday evening. The fair entered its final two days today and will be culminated with the livestock auction sale beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Golden Meadows benefit auction termed best ever; $7,600 netted

    The June 21 benefit auction to raise money for the Golden Meadows Home Special Needs Resident Fund was “the most successful ever,” Administrator Tom Magnan reported to the Adams County Commissioners at their meeting Monday.
    The auction, the 20th annual benefit event held at the county facility, netted $7,665, Magnan told commissioners. He stated the auction itself grossed $6,904, while food sales ($485.91), a pair of raffles ($234) and $625 in cash donations brought total revenues to $8,249.

4-H Fair Ambassadors named

Pending appraisal, county will buy Winchester Street parcel for $1.1 million as new jail site

    It appears the proposed new Adams County jail may finally have found a home.
    The Adams County Council and the Adams County Commissioners met in executive session Monday morning to discuss the possibility of purchasing a 162-acre tract of unimproved farmland on the south side of Decatur along Winchester Street.
