    When it was announced March 19 the city of Decatur was was one of six finalists for a Stellar Communities grant which, if awarded, would pump millions of dollars into local community improvement projects, the excitement in the air was palpable.

    Staff photographer Mike Lamm and I arrived in Delphi Wednesday about 45 minutes early for our scheduled meeting with Mayor Randy Strasser. It was by design, as we had left ourselves a little extra time to absorb the “flavor” of the small city before meeting with its chief executive to discuss his experience in landing a Stellar Communities grant.

Sunday brings warmer temperatures

Democrat staff wins 5 AP awards

The Decatur Daily Democrat captured five awards in the Indiana Associated Press Managing Editors’  2014 news and photo competition.
    The results of the contest, which recognizes outstanding newspaper writing and photography by member news organizations during 2013, were announced Thursday.
    Daily Democrat staff reporter Mike Lamm won first place in the general interest column-writing competition. Entrants were asked to submit three opinion pieces and were judged on the total body of their work.

    Adams County Auditor Mary Beery has released information related to the improper property tax calculations performed by her office for low income senior citizens who qualify for an over-65 age tax deduction.

Early voting begins April 8

    Adams County Clerk of Courts Gayla Reinhart has announced early voting hours for the 2014 May primary election will be held from 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.,  April 8 through May 2, in the hallway of the Adams County courthouse, on the main level.
    Early voting will also be held from 8 a.m.-noon on May 5, the day before this year’s May 6 primary balloting. Saturday early voting hours will be from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. April 26 and May 3.

Winter took heavy toll on hospital finances

    Snow, ice, slush, cold temperatures and just plain ‘ole miserable winter weather was listed as a main factor in Adams Memorial Hospital showing a year-to-date deficit of $201,193 in a report given to members of the hospital board of trustees Wednesday night.

Spring break continues in Adams County with a multitude of activities for youngsters. Wednesday evening, dozens of children hit the Bellmont High School pool to enjoy a few hours of water fun. The activities will continue throughout the week with various organizations participating in the festivities.

Berne marks 20 years as Tree City

    The city of Berne was recently recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a 20 year member of Tree City U.S.A. with a Tree City flag and two Tree City U.S.A. road signs that will be placed at the north and south ends of the city limits on U.S. 27.
    Mayor Bill McKean told city council Monday the Berne Tree Board was established under the leadership of former Mayor Blaine Fulton and city council members Rod Lautzenhhsier, Gregg Sprunger, Floyd Liechty, Lloyd Neuenschwander and McKean.
