March expected to come in like a LION

    March may not come in like a lion Saturday everywhere across the nation, but winter will continue to roar during the first several days of the month and impact more than 100 million people.
    The National Weather Service in northern Indiana has issued a winter storm watch for Adams and surrounding counties which is in effect from late Saturday night through Monday morning.
    According to the NWS, heavy snowfall, with accumulations of between 6-9 inches, is expected during that time frame.

This flock of sandhill cranes, spotted flying north over Decatur earlier this week, may want to to reconsider that decision as another major winter storm appears to be headed for northern Indiana over the upcoming weekend.

Berne city council okays purchase of badly-needed fire pumper/tanker

    The ever-present green fire tuck of the Berne Fire Department, which is about 35-years-old, may soon be a thing of the past.
    Berne Fire Chief John Crider met with city council Monday evening to request permission to seek bids for a new pumper tanker for the department. The new pumper tanker would hold 3,000 gallons of water and would be used for both city and rural fires.

    With the extreme winter Adams County has experienced this year, causing area schools to cancel more than 10 days of classes, the question of how — and when — students will make up those days has been in the forefront of the minds of many area parents.

BHS holds first-ever Career Day

    Bellmont High School held its first Career Day Wednesday morning as local businesses, government employees and manufacturers came to the school to give BHS students a look at their possible future.

The Decatur Fire Department Water Rescue Unit was dispatched to assist the Adams County Sheriff’s Department about 10 a.m. Wednesday after an unidentified man attempted to drive his vehicle onto the ice of C.R. 225N, which is currently flooded. A spokesman for the department stated sheriff’s deputies were able to rescue the man from the ice before the rescue unit arrived.

ATVs may soon be permitted on Berne thoroughfares

    A proposed ordinance may soon allow all terrain vehicles and utility vehicles to operate on Berne roadways along the same scope of golf carts.
    Under the proposed amendment to the golf cart ordinance currently in place in Berne, ATV and UTV riders at least 18-years-old would be allowed to drive on Berne city and rural streets with the same regulations as golf carts.

The usual suspects

     Floodwaters have escaped their banks along the St. Marys River in all the usual places — including S.R. 101 just outside Pleasant Mills, as shown in the photograph at left taken Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service predicts the river will fall below flood stage at around 1 a.m. Thursday. The Wabash River was expected to fall below flood stage overnight.
 

Veteran educator feted for accomplishments

    Herb Resler has earned all those titles through his five decades of service to Indiana students. He was honored recently for his dedication and tenure during a ceremony at Adams Central High School, where he remains involved with the athletic program.

Barge business brings jobs to Berne

    Berne business is about to get a booster shot in the way of a planned expansion of Mid-America Foundation Co., doing business as Poseidon Barge, which will bring approximately 42 new skilled jobs to its new Berne location.
    MAFC, which manufactures barges and is headquartered in Fort Wayne, plans to expand its business base in Berne with the purchase of a part of the former Ficosa Complex, located at 725 Parr Road.
