Farm groups hold annual dinner

    Three local agricultural organizations shared the spotlight at Thursday night’s Ag Extravaganza, held at the Decatur Knights of Columbus Hall. Nearly 100 members of the Adams County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Adams County Pork Producers Association and the Adams County Farm Bureau gathered to honor their respective agricultural leaders and elect new officers for the coming year.

Voglewede announces bid for clerk of courts

    Jim Voglewede Jr. of rural Decatur has announced his candidacy for Adams County Clerk of the Circuit Court on the Republican ticket.
    Voglewede is the second Republican to announce plans to seek the office that will be vacated because current Clerk of Courts Gayla Reinhart is barred by term limit law from seeking re-election. Decatur businessman Ed Dyer has also announced his candidacy for that seat.

Girl Scout cookies for troops

Coni Mayer, executive director of the Adams County Community Foundation, on Thursday helped area Girl Scouts understand the importance of supporting others in their community and offered tips on improving their sales technique during the current cookie sales drive. The ACCF will purchase two boxes of cookies from each Scout — a total of  200 boxes — which will be given to local military families.

NA first in region to adopt ‘Big Goal’

     North Adams Community Schools is the first district in northeast Indiana to elect the “Big Goal” as their official mission statement. Board members approved the goal adoption at the January school board meeting.

    The Arctic blast that seems to have taken up Indiana residency this January has wreaked havoc on area school systems, causing six cancellations and seven two-hour delays for all three Adams County school districts so far this year.

Online tax payments may be made 24 hours a day

Adams County Treasurer Tom Krueckeberg has announced the eGov Payment Center for Adams County property tax payments has been installed, certified and is now operational.
    In an attempt to enhance citizen convenience, the county treasurer’s office has launched a new online payment portal where residents may make property tax payments online 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Payments may be made using a VISA, MasterCard or Discover credit card, or a business or personal checking account.

Jobless rate lowest since May of 2008

    Adams County’s December unemployment rate fell nearly a point from the previous month’s level, and dipped to the lowest point in nearly six years in which the Daily Democrat has kept records.
    According to figures released Tuesday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the jobless rate for Adams County last month stood at 5.4 percent, down from 6.3 percent in November and well below the rate of 7.7 percent in December of 2012. In December of 2011 the county’s unemployment rate was 8.5 percent.

Students return to classes as Mother Nature loosens grip

     With all three Adams County schools back in session — albeit on a two hour delay — things may slowly be returning to normal in the Decatur area.
    After bone chilling temperatures have kept all but the most hardy hunkered down inside nice, cozy homes and offices, Mother Nature seems to be loosening her grip as temperatures are expected to reach a high of about 20 degrees today.

     Kory, a 9-month-old kangaroo, made a visit to Decatur Tuesday, accompanying a veterinarian in whose temporary care he was under into the Eichhorn Jewelry story.

    Adams County Highway Department Superintendent Mark Mitchel on Monday updated the Adams County Commissioners on what his department has been doing to keep area roads cleared of ice and snow during the most recent cold snap.
