Behind the Black Friday ads

    The Daily Democrat will publish on Thanksgiving Day, and readers who pick up that day’s newspaper from their doorstep or at their favorite convenience store will be treated to a whopping 1.9-pound edition.
    Admittedly it’s normal to weigh your turkey, not your newspaper, on Thanksgiving Day, but Democrat mail room manager Donna Breisch did just that in the days leading up the DDD’s largest edition of the year. She was just curious.

Jailer fired; no reason given, yet

    The Adams County Commissioners conducted both an executive session Tuesday morning and a special session Tuesday afternoon in Adams County Circuit Court to consider terminating the employment of an individual with the Adams County Sheriff’s Department.

Cook the turkey, and not your house

    With the Thanksgiving holiday almost upon us, it’s time to take a moment to think about fire safety. According to the National Fire Protection Agency, Thanksgiving day is the number one leading day for home cooking fires. Currently, one of the most common causes of burn injuries and fires is individuals attempting to deep fry a turkey without taking proper precautions.

Bridge congregation helps feed needy children

Nearly 400 members of The Bridge Community Church in Decatur and Berne partnered with Kids Against Hunger Saturday to pack 85,536 meals for children in need. The church collected enough money by saving extra pocket change, money usually spent on dining out and outright donations to pay for nearly seven tons of food.

County snow removal plans for season are outlined

    With colder weather effecting road conditions in the local area, Adams County Highway Department Superintendent Mark Mitchel reported plans for snow removal for this winter season to the Adams County Commissioners at their regularly-scheduled Monday afternoon meeting in the service complex.
    Noting that while “each storm is different,” Mitchel informed commissioners his department will “try to get out earlier this year; about 5 p.m.” if conditions warrant such a response.

The holiday season kicked off over the just-completed weekend during the Decatur Small Business Association’s sixth annual Christmas Open House.

Crash kills Monroeville 21-year-old

The Allen County Sheriff’s Department reported that Derek Franz, 21, Monroeville, was killed Saturday evening around 11 p.m. when the pick-up truck he was driving left the roadway and then hit a guard rail and concrete barrier. The impact of the initial collision caused his truck to roll over several times.
Franz was pronounced dead at the scene by the Allen County Coroner’s Office with blunt force trauma being ruled as the cause of death.

Trio honored for substance abuse efforts

Three members of the Adams County Substance Abuse Awareness Council were recognized recently by the Northeast Regional Advisory Board of the Governor’s Commission for a Drug Free Indiana at the group’s 18th annual meeting.  The purpose of the Northeast Regional Advisory Board is to collaborate to reduce the impact of alcohol and drugs in the 14-county northeast Indiana area.
