Memorial set for city’s Viet victims

    Just in time for Memorial Day came the announcement at this week's Decatur City Council meeting that the city will be getting a memorial to honor six city residents who were killed in the line of duty during the Vietnam War.
    Mayor John Schultz said at the meeting that the memorial is being sponsored by the local VFW and American Legion posts, and that members of those organizations would like to place it somewhere near the gazebo along the walkway at Riverside Center.

Willshire museum enlarged

    Among area Memorial Day events is the military exhibit in Willshire, Ohio.
    In its third year, store owners Bill and Aleta Weiss have completely transformed the entire Willshire Home Furnishings store, at 318 State Street in downtown Willshire, into a military museum to bring to the public an exhibit that will offer endless lessons in history, a news release said.

NAdams bids farewell to retirees

    North Adams Community Schools held an open house at the administration building on Wednesday to honor the retirement of five employees.
    Retirees include Superintendent Dr. Wylie Sirk, who has been with North Adams for 19½ years; Mike Thieme, a bus driver for 40 ½ years; teacher Rick Koester, 38 years; and Cindy Wass, a paraprofessional for 27 years.
    Also retiring is Nancy Ulman, a custodian for 25½ years.

Hospital gets 2nd surgeon

    Adams Health Network (AHN) interim CEO JoEllen Eidam revealed to AHN trustees Wednesday night at their monthly meeting that the hospital has successfully recruited another surgeon to join Dr. Anthony Nigliazzo in the practice of general surgery.
    Eidam said Dr. Lindsay B. Hardley will be starting her surgical practice at Adams Memorial Hospital (AMH) in September as she will be finishing her surgical residency program at Doctors Hospital (Ohio Health) in Columbus, Ohio, in August.

County drug sweep nets eight arrests

    Early Wednesday morning, a group of police officers arrested eight people in Adams County for a variety of drug violations.
    Arrest warrants were issued for the operation by the Adams Circuit Court after covert informants allegedly purchased a variety of controlled substances, including methamphetamines, prescription medications, and marijuana.

Fleetwood owner to shut plant just bought

    ELKHART, Ind. (AP) — A northern Indiana factory where 165 workers build ambulances will be shut down by its new owner in a decision announced a week after the same company said it would close a nearby recreational vehicle plant with about 500 workers.
    SJC Industries has notified the state Department of Workforce Development that it will start terminating employees in July from the ambulance factory in Elkhart as it completes production work there.

Inskeep set to step down

    The biggest piece of news to come out of Tuesday night's Decatur City Council meeting had nothing to do with ordinances, sewers, fire protection and the like. Instead, it was the pending retirement of the city's water superintendent for the last 17-plus years, Jim Inskeep.
    Inskeep is stepping down effective May 31, after 41 years with the department.
    He joined the department under Mayor Harry Hebble, making a little over two bucks an hour, and replaced Wayne Carpenter as superintendent in 1996.

Morning raid leaves several facing drug charges

    A large group of police officers, armed with warrants, picked up several people in Adams County on drug-related charges this morning.
    The officers met around 5 a.m. at the Adams County Jail for a meeting, then began looking for suspects and making arrests.
    Names of those arrested were being processed this morning and will be released later, likely today, by the sheriff's department.

Sculpture Tour 2013 schedule unveiled

    Decatur Sculpture Tour officials have announced that the second-year event will  launch with day-long activities, including a new event, a film competition, which integrates sculptures from the tour.
    The tour will be held on Saturday, June 8. Sculptures on the tour now total 16 created from artists locally and around the country. The sculptures will be on display until May of 2014.
