The South Adams school board, meeting last week in regular session, approved the adoption of a Fire and Rescue Career and Technical Education pilot class for the 2014-15 school year. Geneva firefighter Art Booth had approached high school principal Trent Lehman last spring concerning the possibility of offering such a class through South Adams Schools, to be taught at the Geneva fire station.
The Adams Central High School Marching Band, known as The Squadron of Sound, is on its way to semi-state competition after receiving a gold rating Saturday at the Lafayette Jefferson regional contest. Woodlan and Bluffton also earned gold ratings at Lafayette and advanced to semi-state in Class D. The state marching band finals will be held Nov. 2 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Sasha J. Hunt, 22, Berne, was charged with attempted murder, a class A felony, and neglect of a dependent, a class C felony, after police say she tried to kill her 3-month-old son.
According to a probable cause affidavit, on Oct. 13 Hunt placed a sock in or over the mouth of her son and wound tape around his head to hold the sock in place. Hunt then allegedly wrapped her son in a blanket, placed him face down on a pillow inside a closet, closed the door, and walked away.
The former Dunbar Furniture Company building that has blighted the city landscape for several years may soon be gone, according to Berne City Attorney Jim Beitler.
Beitler told the city council Tuesday he recently met with representatives from Indianapolis and Fort Wayne firms regarding the property and feels the city will be ready to move into “phase two” of its plan to eliminate the eyesore.
Adams County Treasurer Tom Krueckeberg informed county commissioners of the pending sale of properties with delinquent taxes within the county at Tuesday’s weekly commission meeting.
The Decatur Callithumpian Committee has announced the selection of David S. Haggard as the 2013 Callithumpian grand marshal. Each year an individual is selected who has made a significant contribution to the community.
Haggard, a native of Adams County, was born Sept. 16, 1942, to the late Harvey and Barbara (Smith) Haggard. He graduated from Adams Central in 1961, then attended Manchester College for three years and graduated from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science in 1966. He served in the United States Air Force.
The dual-credit Health Occupation Program at Bellmont High School has really taken off.
A group of 45 juniors from all three county high schools gathered near the softball field at Bellmont Wednesday afternoon to welcome the Lutheran Air helicopter, flown by pilot Derek Emmert. The aircraft is used for emergency life flights within a 100 mile radius of Fort Wayne.
A Berne woman is being held today at the Adams County Law Enforcement Center under a $100,000 surety bond after being arrested Wednesday by the Berne Police Department on charges of attempted murder and neglect of a dependent person.
Sasha J. Hunt, 21, N. Jefferson Street, was taken into custody by police at 4:54 p.m. More information about the charges was not available at press time today from either the Adams County Prosecuting Attorney's office or the Berne Police Department.
