Bald Eagle spotted in Pleasant Mills area

    This bald eagle was photographed near Pleasant Mills shortly after noon Sunday. Initially perched in a tree along the banks of the swollen St. Marys River, the eagle took flight as the photographer got a little too close.

Roof work begins at BHS gym

    Wright Risk Insurers, the insurance carrier for North Adams Community Schools, has approved immediate replacement of the Bellmont High School gymnasium roof that was damaged when high-velocity, straight-line winds passed through the area last month. Work is to be undertaken during the Christmas break.

AC grad has found her calling: Military animal care specialist

     A graduate of Adams Central High School scrubs into the sterile operating room and lays out the instruments the surgeon will need. High-tech life-support machines surround her as she draws blood from the patient’s hairy paw.
    This patient, a 6-year-old German shepherd, is just one of the many military working dogs she and her fellow animal care specialists provide medical care for on a daily basis.

Decatur council makes 2014 appointments

    Decatur City Council’s final meeting of 2013 this week brought about the usual year-end re-appointments, plus one new appointment.
    The new appointment saw council naming semi-retired funeral home director Dave Haggard to replace Don Tuszynski on the Board of Zoning Appeals. Tuszynski resigned in November.
    “Don has been on a long time and did a nice job for the city; we really appreciate what he did,” Mayor John Schultz said.

Christmas program held after weeklong delay

     Students at St. Joseph Catholic School performed their annual Christmas program Thursday evening, one week after the event was postponed due to inclement weather. Students, many dressed as angels, were on stage to perform the opening number.

Street dept. garage demo cost below estimate

    Not only does the site of the former dilapidated street department garage near the city police station look a whole lot better, according to Councilman Ken Meyer, who resides near the area, but the city realized a cost savings of approximately $23,000 on the project, city council learned at its meeting on Tuesday night.

Postmaster asks for public’s help during heavy snows

“Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow” seemed to be the theme song for most of Indiana earlier this week. The worst is over, for now, but there is surely more to come, and the postmaster of the Decatur branch office of the U.S. Postal Service is asking customers to help letter carriers deliver the holiday mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs and mailboxes.

Their pasture may have been covered in snow, but these two horses along the Indiana-Ohio state line didn’t seem to mind late Wednesday afternoon. The equines actually seemed to enjoy foraging through the white stuff.

Police station added to city hall proposal

    Decatur City Council’s final meeting of 2013 provided a major slingshot into 2014: a project that will provide a new city hall building as well as a new police station. And barring any major catastrophes, it will be done without any tax increases.
    How’s that for providing a big wrapup to a year?

Hospital disputes network coverage

    Adams Memorial Hospital officials have announced that information provided to hundreds of area senior citizens from United Healthcare concerning physicians covered in their Medicare Advantage Plan was partially incorrect.
    AMH chief financial officer Dane Wheeler said United Healthcare members, including AARP  Medicare Complete, were informed via mail recently that Adams County physicians were no longer considered providers for their plans and they would have to seek new physicians if they wished to be covered.
