Monument’s history laid out

    Although formal re-dedication ceremonies marking the 100th anniversary of the Adams County Peace Monument were held last month during the annual Kekionga Festival, the true century mark from the monument’s initial dedication will not take place for another month, on Oct. 30.

Signs suggest job market is picking up

WASHINGTON (AP) — The job market is sending signs that it may be strengthening.
    The number of people seeking unemployment benefits has sunk to its lowest point in six years because few companies are laying anyone off anymore.
    A survey of service companies found that they added jobs last month at their fastest pace in six months.
    And more small businesses say they plan to hire than at any point since the recession began.

Lehman Park Harvest Fest is Oct. 5

The fourth annual Lehman Park Harvest Festival will be held in Berne on Saturday, Oct. 5. Proceeds received from the festival will benefit the Lehman Park Equipment Fund and will be used to make improvements to the park playground areas. A complete list of festival events will appear next week in the Democrat.

The fall harvest is in full swing in Adams County. Local farmer  Bruce Barger said his family began harvesting soybeans Monday evening and “we expect the early beans to be real good.” Barger said yields are averaging in the mid-60’s (bushels per acre) with moisture content measured at 13 percent, which Barger called “perfect.”
 

‘Slick’ Leonard, a DDD reader?

    Former Indiana Pacers head coach Bobby “Slick” Leonard reportedly is an occasional reader of the Decatur Daily Democrat.
    The photo above shows Leonard, a resident of Carmel, enjoying a story in the Aug. 30 edition of the Democrat.
    The story, written by Mark Bennett of the Tribune-Star, focused on an upcoming documentary on Leonard’s life by award-winning filmmaker Ted Green. It appeared on Page 1 of the Democrat, with Bennett’s permission.
