Diocese gets to keep some records sealed

    INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A federal judge has given a Catholic diocese in northern Indiana permission to keep some records under seal as lawyers prepare for a possible trial over a former teacher’s claim that she was fired because she had in vitro fertilization.
    Emily Herx’s lawsuit against the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend addresses the constitutional balance between reproductive rights and religious rights and could determine which one trumps the other.

Ogg leaving county post

    Plan Commission Director Neil Ogg announced at Monday's county commissioners meeting that he will retire on September 1.
    Ogg was appointed to the position 15 years ago by the commissioners.
    Commissioner Kim Fruechte told him, "You'll be a hard person to replace."

Berne resident sent to prison

June 4, 2013

    Nicholas S. Handshoe, 41, Berne, recently pleaded guilty in Adams Circuit Court to several charges and was given prison time by Judge Chad E. Kukelhan.
    Guilty pleas were entered to invasion of privacy, possession of methamphetamines, resisting law enforcement, and violating probation.
