Jobless rate holds at 6.6

    Adams County's unemployment rate remained at a four-year low during October, according to figures released Tuesday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. The latest state report showed the county with a jobless rate of 6.6 percent for the month, identical to September's reading and down .7 percent from the local unemployment rate in August.

City to set up disaster plan

    The names are all too familiar: Katrina, Joplin, Sandy, Henryville in Indiana, among them.
    In the wake of these horrific disasters in recent years, many communities have begun to look ahead, to attempt to make plans for dealing with disasters, either natural or man-made.
    The plan which will be put together for the City of Decatur of Decatur was unveiled at Tuesday night's city council meeting by Eran Hackman of the Adams County Emergency Management Agency (EMA).

Special day is declared -- McCormick child who died here sparked state law

    Decatur Mayor John Schultz has proclaimed Friday, November 30, as Cora Mae McCormick Day.
    Cora McCormick was a Decatur resident, born November 30, 2009 to Ben and Kristine (Brite) McCormick. She died unexpectedly five days later when she suddenly stopped breathing in her mother’s arms. It was later determined Cora died from an undetected congenital heart defect.

Decatur, Berne city offices slate closings

    Decatur City Hall will be closed Thursday through Monday for Thanksgiving.
    There will be no collection of garbage on Thursday, but both the Thursday and regular Friday routes will be run Friday.
    There will be no leaf pickup Thursday. Officials said Friday, November 30, will be the final day for leaf collection here.
    The city's compost site is always open.

BHS to present musical on Erekson stage

    Bellmont High School will be presenting Elton John's and Tim Rice’s Aida (school edition) on December 1 and 2.
       Aida is a contemporary musical take on a grand classic tale of the timeless bond between an enslaved Nubian princess and an Egyptian soldier, a news release said.

20 of 25 provisionals rejected

    The Adams County Election Board met on Friday to review the provisional ballots cast in the Nov. 6 presidential election.
    A provisional ballot is cast when there is some question as to the eligibility of the voter, such as not having valid Indiana identification or not showing as a registered voter, according to board Chairman Alan Baumgartner.
    Of the 25 provisional votes reviewed by the board, only five were accepted, with 20 provisional votes rejected.

Cleanup all that remains for sweeper shop/Holthouse Drug building

    A pile of rubble was all that remained Friday following the demolition of the sweeper shop/Holthouse Drug building in downtown Decatur.
    Fleming Excavating spent 12 or so hours of work over a period of two days razing one of the oldest buildings in the city.
    Next up is the cleanup, which is expected to take several days.
    Some traffic restrictions remain in place.
 

Franze’s profession stays same, department different

    Deputy James Franze, who spent 25 years with the Decatur Police Department, began his new career with the Adams County Sheriff's Department on Thursday.
    "I actually tried to work for the sheriff's office first, before the police department," said Franze. "but it just didn't work out and I got a job with the city. So now, instead of starting my career here, this is where I'll finish."

Orr clinches SA board seat

    With no provisional ballots changing the final vote totals and the runnerup not planning to seek a recount, Amy Orr on Friday won a seat on the South Adams School Board.
    Actually, a new seat.
    Orr currently holds the District 3 seat on the board, but sought the at-large seat being vacated by Steve Dobler, who did not file for a new term. Orr reportedly is planning to move out of District 3.

BHS has ‘structural issues’ -- No threat of danger, superintendent says

    While no imminent threat of danger exists, the North Adams School Board learned this week that cracks in the upper floor of the "C" wing at Bellmont High School have been discovered and will need to be fixed.
