The mere hint of an adult business expressing interest in Decatur has initiated a proposed change in the city’s zoning regulations, and the Decatur Plan Commission on Monday evening got its first glimpse at an amended zoning ordinance aimed at limiting adult and sexually-oriented businesses in the city.

Dan Sigler was back at work Monday in his Columbia City law office after a dramatic weekend in which the state official he was prosecuting was found guilty by a jury — a verdict Sigler learned of at his home while in bed recuperating from the flu.
"Everyone's calling today to see if they're in my will," Sigler laughed over the telephone.

Adams County Sheriff Shane Rekeweg on Monday requested permission from the county commissioners to begin accepting applications to fill a vacancy for a jailer position at the Adams County Jail.
Rekeweg stated that the vacancy is the result of a full-time jailer resigning last year.

Former Adams County Coroner Leslie L. (Barker) Cook has announced that she will seek a new four-year term, subject to the Republican primary.
She is the only announced candidate for the office.
Cook, a rural Decatur resident, has served in the coroner's office since 1998 and currently is the deputy corner under her husband, Mark Ccok, who was elected coroner four years ago. Leslie Cook was appointed coroner in 1998, then won election to the office from 2000-2004 and 2004-2008.

South Adams Trail, Inc. President Gary Habegger said this week that work to begin Phase 1A of the SATI project is progressing.
Habegger said Phase 1A of the project will consist of a 10-foot-wide walking/biking path from Rainbow Lake in Geneva to the Wabash River; and also from the Lehman Park Pavillion to 700 South, in Berne.
Trailheads will be located in both the Geneva and Berne locations with restrooms and parking available, Habegger reported.
Outgoing Decatur Chamber of Commerce President Carl Stevens has ended a two-year run as head of the local organization.
At last week's annual Chamber dinner, Stevens turned the gavel over to Decatur Daily Democrat Publisher Ron Storey, who will serve as chamber president for the coming year.
The Chamber honored Ed Coil with the Stephen Decatur Award and two businesses, First Bank of Berne and Custom Car Care, as recipients of its large and small business awards, respectively.

Minutes after delivering his closing argument in the Charlie White case, former Adams County prosecutor Dan Sigler, acting as special prosecutor in the White case, quietly left the Hamilton County Courthouse north of Indianapolis.
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — The Department of Defense is planning a mission change for Indiana Air National Guard’s 122nd Fighter Wing in Fort Wayne.
The Journal Gazette reports the wing’s A-10 jets will be replaced by MC-12 aircraft, a medium- to low-altitude, twin-engine turboprop aircraft with a primary mission is providing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support directly to ground forces.
Ed Coil, who was born in Ohio and spent the bulk of his professional career in Fort Wayne and Detroit before becoming bringing his numerable talents to Adams County, was bestowed with the Decatur Chamber of Commerce's greatest honor on Thursday evening as the 23rd recipient of its Stephen Decatur Award.
The award, presented annually since 1988 for lifetime achievement and contributions to the local community, was one of several handed out at the chamber's annual dinner meeting held at the Knights of Columbus pavilion.
First Bank of Berne has deep roots in Adams County, dating back to 1891 when the financial institution was established in Berne.
And while its roots in Decatur are less deep, dating back "only" to 1995, the bank was honored Thursday night as the Decatur Chamber of Commerce's Large Business of 2011 during the chamber's annual membership dinner.
