December 6th
Four Berne residents seeking two seats on the South Adams Schools' board of education were interviewed by current board members during a work session Tuesday.
Applicants seeking appointment to two vacant District 3 seats on the board include Ray Gill, Landon Patterson, Wesley Haight and Rachael Rosswurm. The board will select two of the candidates to fill vacancies at their next meeting, to be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
A meeting will be held at noon on Wednesday, December 12, in Room 125 of the Adams County Service Complex for public or private volunteer agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Funds.
Representatives of those agencies must contact Millie Deaton, executive director of the Adams County Community and Family Services (CFS), no later than December 10, by stopping at the agency at the Complex, 313 W. Jefferson St., Decatur, or by calling 724-3574.

A bit of a love affair is about to be renewed in Decatur this summer: The ABATE motorcycles will be returning.
It will be the third appearance here for the bikers and the first two, in 2010 and 2009, proved extremely popular with both the group and city residents.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana’s voter turnout in this year’s general election fell off this year when compared to 2008’s level of 62 percent.
Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson said recently that 58 percent of Indiana’s 4.5 million registered voters — about 2.7 million — cast ballots in the General Election. That matched the 58 percent turnout in 2004.
Lawson says Wells County in northeastern Indiana had the highest turnout in the state at 72 percent.
Christmas lights that are showing their age and a downtown flowers program that is in a financial hole sparked a discussion at Tuesday night's meeting of Decatur City Council.
Councilman Matt Dyer raised the issue, noting that some business people have complained to him that not all the lights are functional.
Mayor John Schultz noted that the holiday lights are a Chamber of Commerce program, and that the city provides no funding for the lights.
December 4th
A long career in law enforcement will officially come to an end December 31 when Eric (Keebie) Meyer steps down from his post as chief deputy with the Adams County Sheriff's Department.
Meyer will be moving to the Cape Canaveral area of Florida, where he will be joining his wife, Tammy, who was unexpectedly transferred there earlier this year by her company. The veteran lawman said he will likely find some employment in Florida, but it won't be in law enforcement.

INDIANAPOLIS – When Margaret Ray Ringenberg completed her first solo flight in 1941 at the age of 19, some people said women didn’t belong in the cockpit.
But the Hoosier pilot proved them wrong, launching a long career in aviation that included service in World War II, a stint in airplane racing and shuttling Indiana senators to Washington.
As unseasonably warm as the weather has been recently, we haven't quite broken the record . . . at least not yet.
According to a spokesperson at the Decatur Weather Station, Monday's high of 65 came close to the 1998 record of 68 degrees, but fell short of setting a new mark.
In 1998, Decatur saw a high of 65 degrees four times in the first week of December, then climbed to 67 degrees on Dec. 6, and reached 72 degrees on Dec. 7, according to the spokesperson.
December 3rd
Decatur's downtown flower program is in dire jeopardy.
Faced with a huge deficit, the program may not get off the ground next year unless necessary cash is raised relatively soon.
Local pastor Dan York, who has been at the forefront of the program from the start a number of years ago, said Friday that the program is faced with a deficit of $2,648.
Spotlight, Decatur’s annual community and business expo, will be held this year at Bellmont Middle School on Saturday, March 9, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., organizers have announced.
The tradition of “spotlighting” area business, industries and non-profits will continue this year as the pride of Decatur will be on display, Chamber of Commerce officials said.
This will be the 17th consecutive year for the event.
