The Decatur Small Business Association’s (SBA) fifth annual Christmas Open House will be held this Friday and Saturday — downtown and around town, SBA officials said
Over 20 businesses will be participating.
"Begin your Christmas shopping and check out the great holiday decorating ideas plus specials, entertainment, prizes, demonstrations and refreshments which will be abundant throughout the two-day event," the SBA said in a news release.
David A. Theobald, author of the book "Cornjerkers," was born in Decatur and lived here until 1961, when his family moved to California. Although the family never moved back, Theobald says Decatur remains an integral part of his memory and in his heart.
The North Adams Art Council (NAAC) hs announced that artists from the Old 27 art group have been working on "The Little City With the Big H'art," a guided tour of the Sculpture Walk in Decatur.
Artists have compiled biographies of their lives and work, including human interest aspects of their work, which will also be included in the tour, according to a news release.
A representative of the NAAC said they "hope to have the tour ready by the Christmas Open House held downtown."
The Adams County Community Foundation (ACCF) has announced one of the newest funds at the foundation, the Chelsea Kay Hart Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Chelsea passed away on April 8, 2010, from injuries sustained two days earlier in an ATV accident.
The ATV accident involved three people, with two sustaining minor injuries. Chelsea was rushed to the hospital where her parents, Bill and Karen, along with her brothers, Jon and Ben, waited for updates on her condition, according to the release.
Some major changes in traffic patterns will be seen in downtown Decatur starting Monday, as Fleming Excavating begins the task of demolishing the former Dwayne's Sweeper Shop/Holthouse Drug Co. building.
Traffic will not be allowed in the half block of Second St. from Monroe St. south to the first alley, and the half block of Second St. from Monroe St. north to the first alley.
That, of course, means that traffic traveling on Monroe St. will not be able to turn onto Second St.
Mercer County, Ohio, Sheriff Jeff Grey scheduled a news conference this morning in Celina to update information on a homicide in Rockford, Ohio, some 25 miles southeast of Decatur.
Just before 11 a.m. Thursday, the Rockford Police Department was called to a home at 509 W. North St. in Rockford. Police Chief Paul May found the body of Melinda Shinn, 26.
It was apparent that the woman had been shot, reports said. Her son, 9, reportedly called police.
WATERLOO, Ind. (AP) — A police officer from a small northeastern Indiana town who was shot in the face 11 months ago while responding to a call is back at work.
The Auburn Star reported that 48-year-old Waterloo Deputy Marshal Steve Brady returned to work this week.
He was shot on Dec. 15 by a man fatally shot by police about three hours later after pointing a gun at officers.
Geneva Clerk-Treasurer Bill Warren told council members at Tuesday's council meeting that he was informed by the Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF) that the proposed 2013 town budget will not be approved for the requested amount of $574,767.
Warren said he missed a technical "growth factor" deadline which was for a property tax review form for non-binding review. The deadline was Sept. 4, but Warren submitted the information on Sept. 5.
A special event to honor veterans will be held Saturday morning at the Decatur Walmart store, with public participation encouraged.
Starting at 9 a.m., veterans who work at the store as well as veterans of the community will be honored. "We would like to thank them all for the service that they have done for all of the people of America," a Walmart news release said.
KNIGHTSTOWN, Ind. (AP) — An effort is under way to upgrade one of the most prominent tourism destinations in Henry County.
The Hoosier Gym Community Center seeks to raise funds for a new roof over the lobby of the facility.
While the 90-year-old gym itself is intact, water damage is visible in the lobby from the leaky roof. The lobby is where historic photographs and movie memorabilia are kept.
