A member of the Amish community, who wished to remain anonymous, has expressed high praise and thanks to the Adams County Sheriff's and Berne Police Departments for their quick work in apprehending the suspects in the alleged recent Amish attacks in rural Berne.
"We were afraid to send our children out," the man said this week in a visit to the Daily Democrat. "It was awful to be targeted like that. Those people could have gotten jobs or help from someone. They didn't have to do that [the alleged attacks]."
A Huntington man who pleaded guilty to driving the truck that struck and killed a construction worker in Decatur in 2011 has been sentenced in Adams Circuit Court by Judge Fredrick A. Schurger.
Gary L. Biehl, a resident of Huntington, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with four years suspended. He will serve the six years on home detention.
Adams County Clerk Gayla Reinhart has corrected a list of early voting hours published in this newspaper earlier this week.
Starting on Tuesday, October 9, and running through Friday, November 2, early voting will be available in the courthouse from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays.
Also scheduled are Saturday voting hours from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on October 27 and November 3.
Voting hours on Monday, November 5, will be 8 a.m.-noon.

GARY, Ind. (AP) — An Indiana National Guard unit that lost six of its members, including Nick Taylor of Berne, during an almost year-long deployment in Afghanistan returned to Indiana Wednesday in a tearful, hug-filled reunion with friends and family.
More than 80 members of the Valparaiso-based 713th Engineer Company were greeted by about 300 relatives and friends when they arrived at the Gary Army Aviation Support Facility.
The hangar erupted in cheers as the door rose to reveal the returning soldiers.
The fall corn and soybean harvest is under way in Adams County, but producers in many cases may not like the results.
Anya Pinkerton, director of the Adams County office of the Farm Service Agency, said Tuesday that several soybean fields have been harvested to date, with yields "right around normal — at 48 bushels per acre."
The sale of bonds to refinance $34,385,000 owed on the original bond issue for the Adams Memorial Hospital (AMH) went off without a hitch last week and early results show hospital officials should realize even greater savings than originally anticipated — nearly $3.5 million.
The Indiana Bond Bank conducted the sale of bonds on September 19 and it took approximately 90 minutes to complete the transaction.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — With a string of gold albums, a hit TV series and the signature ‘‘Moon River,’’ Andy Williams was a voice of the 1960s, although not the ‘60s we usually hear about.
‘‘The old cliche says that if you can remember the 1960s, you weren’t there,’’ the singer once recalled. ‘‘Well, I was there all right, but my memory of them is blurred — not by any drugs I took but by the relentless pace of the schedule I set myself.’’
The Adams Public Library System recently acquired the Richard Roudebush property across from the Decatur branch through a gift from First Merchants Bank and is planning to convert it into a green space.
Library director Kelly Ehinger said, “The location is perfect for outdoor programming and is a dream come true!”
The Adams Wells Crisis Center (AWCC) has announced that it will hold a "Cooking for a Cause" fundraiser this Friday from 6-9 p.m. at the Cross Creek pavilion.
A shelter representative said the event is about "People standing up against domestic violence and showing their support" and is open to the public.
More personnel changes are coming for the Adams County Sheriff's and Decatur Police departments, according to Adams County Sheriff Shane Rekeweg.
Rekeweg told the county commissioners on Monday that one of the jail officers has a conditional offer of employment with the city police department. Providing the officer passes all requirements for the city, they will become a full-time employee of the Decatur Police Department.
