Services held for Nick Taylor

    Nick Taylor was remembered as a leader, a patriot, "an amazing soldier" and dearly missed son, brother and friend during funeral services Tuesday in Berne.
    More than 4,000 of Taylor's "friends" crowded into the same South Adams High School gymnasium where he had accomplished some of his most remarkable athletic feats to pay tribute to the young man from their community who gave his life for his country and the cause of freedom.

'Flag man' in Berne; mourners pay respects

    Illinois resident Larry Eckhardt wanted to find a way to pay tribute to fallen soldiers and their families. So seven years ago he began traveling around the nation putting up full-sized American flags in honor of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
    Over 100 people gathered Saturday at South Adams High School to help Eckhardt put up approximately 2,200 flags in Berne in honor of Spc. Nick Taylor, who recently died in Afghanistan.

Burn ban is lifted-But caution is urged

    The Adams County burn ban has been lifted . . . with extreme caution, according to Decatur Fire Chief Les Marckel.
    Marckel released a statement to the Adams County Commissioners Monday saying that all three Adams County fire chiefs agreed the ban could be lifted, with caution.
    "Some areas of the county have not received as much rain as others and the conditions are still very conducive to grass fires and the like," said Marckel.

Principal is hired by BHS

    Kimberly G. Harsh has been hired as the new principal at Bellmont High School,  North Adams Community School's Superintendent Wylie Sirk announced Monday in a press release.
    Harsh has been principal at Hauser Junior-Senior High school in Hope, Indiana, for four years and spent five years as assistant principal at the school.

Nick comes home

    Northeast Indiana residents turned out en masse Sunday to honor the service and memory of Berne native Spc. Nick Taylor, who was killed two weeks earlier while serving with the Indiana National Guard in Afghanistan.
    Taylor's body returned to Indiana soil sometime after noon on Sunday, arriving at the 122nd Fighter Wing base adjacent to the Fort Wayne International Airport. Following a private ceremony on the air base, Taylor's body then made the 32-mile trip home.
    And he was not alone on that journey.

Ivy Tech offering classes here and at AC

    Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast has announced that it is offering  offering 14 courses in Adams County for the fall semester schedule, running from August 20-December 15.
    Classes will take place at Adams Central High School, Bellmont High School, and Decatur WorkOne's office on First St.
    Individuals are encouraged to register soon as classes fill early.

Storm brought power loss to nursing home

    A recent storm that hit the area was well-documented for the damage that it did to businesses, restaurants, and residences.
    Members of the Adams Health Network Board of Trustees were informed of a situation on June 29 that occurred as a result of the storm when total power was disrupted to the hospital's Adams-Heritage nursing home in Monroeville.

Taylor to pass through around 2:30 Sunday

    The body of the fallen Army Spc. Nick Taylor is expected to pass through Decatur around 2:30 to 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, according to various officials.
     Earlier reports put the pass-through at 3:30.
    The body will arrive on the grounds of the 122nd Fighter Wing base of the Air National Guard in Fort Wayne at approximately 2 p.m. Following a ceremony of approximately 15 minutes, the drive on US 27 to Berne will begin, with an escort.

Services are held today for Guardsman killed with Taylor

    Funeral services were scheduled today for the Indiana National Guardsman killed with Nick Taylor of Berne in an attack in Afghanistan.
    Approximately 60 Indiana Patriot Guard riders and local law enforcement escorted the body of Spc. Sergio Eduardo Perez Jr. of Crown Point from Gary/Chicago International Airport to a funeral home in his hometown on Wednesday.

Aging council gets Berne funds; fire protection pacts up in air

    The Berne City Council earlier this week agreed to continue its $3,000 annual stipend to the Adams County Council on Aging in support of the agency's senior transportation system.
    Council on Aging Director Sharon Tester made her annual appearance to request continued financial support, which she said is crucial to the agency's continued operation.
