RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Andy Griffith, who made homespun Southern wisdom his trademark as the wise sheriff in ‘‘The Andy Griffith Show’’ and the rumpled defense lawyer in ‘‘Matlock,’’ died Tuesday. He was 86.
Griffith died about 7 a.m. at his coastal home, Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie said in a statement.
With special precautions in place, Decatur's Fourth of July fireworks event — the 20th annual — got a green light this week from Mayor John Schultz.
The city of Berne largely escaped the brunt of Friday's storm, although another round of thunderstorms late Sunday afternoon dropped .8 of an inch of badly-needed rainfall on the community.
"We were lucky," said Berne Mayor Bill McKean of the relatively light damage suffered in the city.

"All in all, I'm very pleased with the cleanup; it's going pretty well," Decatur Street/Sanitation Superintendent Jeremy Gilbert said this morning.
City cleanup crews were "nearly halfway through the first pass (of the city)," he said, noting that once completed, a second pass will be made to pick up smaller debris.
People are urged to move their storm debris to curbside to facilitate the cleanup.
