Ben Faurote was handed a four-year term on the North Adams school board by Decatur City Council during a special council session held Tuesday afternoon.
A razor-thin vote — in what was the council's last-ever school board appointment — saw Faurote retain his board seat by a 3-2 margin over newcomer Stacey Bussel. Future school board seats will be filled by voters as the board later this year begins the transformation from an appointed body to an elected one.
Berne firefighters were dispatched to a fully-involved fire at Oakwood Terrace Apartments at 1:50 p.m. yesterday and remained on the scene nearly four hours, with one firefighter suffering minor injuries.
Berne Fire Chief John Crider reported this morning that a firefighter was taken to a local hospital for examination and x-rays due to a hand injury. The injury was not said to be serious, and the firefighter was treated and released.
In recognition of Prevent Child Abuse Awareness Month, the Adams County advocacy group SAFE (Supporting All Families Everyday) has created a pinwheel garden on the south side of the courthouse lawn.
The blue pinwheels, which will be displayed today through Friday, are "like a promise to children to keep them safe," said SAFE spokeswoman Cindy Thieme.
