Adams Central juniors Bess Fiechter and Devan Barger, members of the group VOICE (Indiana's youth movement to speak out against the tobacco industry), headed a table containing some of the ingredients of cigarettes in an effort to inform fellow students of the dangers of smoking.
The activity was held Wednesday and included a display of 27 pairs of shoes to represent the 27 people who die each day in Indiana due to tobacco, according to the group.
Everyone's been saying it can't last. This stunning spate of warm weather in the middle of March probably can't, but this week it's not only lasting but getting warmer every day.
The Decatur weather station has recorded increasing highs for three consecutive days. A high of 73 degrees on Sunday was topped by Monday's 82 which in turn was bested by Tuesday's 85.
South Adams Schools Superintendent Scott Litwiller, during his state of the schools address at a Berne Chamber of Commerce meeting this week, said, "You've no doubt heard the African proverb 'It takes a whole village to raise a child. Likewise, it takes an entire community to educate its youth."
Litwiller explained that the community partners with the schools through PTO, music and athletic boosters and by attending school events such as open houses, fundraisers, athletic and music activities, and by volunteering.
