November 18th
Adams County Solid Waste Management District director Hank Mayer reported at this week's board of directors meeting that the county's sale of recylables is expected to top $100,000 this year, the first time the solid waste district has eclipsed that mark.
Mayer said that while the overall volume of recyclable material brought by private individuals and commercial enterprises to the solid waste district is mostly unchanged in recent years, prices paid to the district for recycled paper, plastics, glass and cardboard have risen.
The annual Operation Christmas Child (OCC) project has begun again, with the Adams County effort based at The Bridge Community Church in Decatur. Twelve other area churches are also involved.
The Bridge, on Winchester Rd. near N. 13th St., will accept shoeboxes filled with school supplies, toys, clothes, hygiene items, candy, and other things that will be sent to needy children in well over 100 nations. The deadline to bring the boxes to the church is next Monday at 1 p.m.
November 17th
People coming from out of town to view Decatur's sculptures? A special event featuring those sculptures?
It could materialize in the next year or so if a group of citizens is able to organize and bring to fruition what they're calling the Decatur Sculpture Walk. Current plans call for the walk to take place August 18-25 of next year, prior to the annual Kekionga Festival.
A 33-year-old Decatur man, Andrew E. Stetler, was convicted by an Adams Circuit Court jury on Wednesday of two counts of child molesting and will be sentenced on December 27.
He was found guilty by the 11-woman, one-man jury of fondling and performing oral sex on two girls, ages seven and nine, in August of 2010.
Bellmont High School will present this weekened “Anne of Green Gables," the story written by L. M Montgomery, adapted into a stage play by Alice Chadwicke and presented through special arrangement by Samuel French, Inc.
Performances will be presented on at 7 p.m. Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Reserved-seat tickets ordered in advance are reserved seat tickets are $6 for adults and $5 for students and seniors citizens. Reserved seats are in the lower section of the theatre.

The City of Decatur is attempting to come into compliance with Indiana's new law on gun toting. It isn't easy.
City Attorney Tim Baker unveiled at Tuesday night's city council meeting an amendment to the city's firearms ordinance. There is, however, considerable question whether or not it will be legally in compliance.
Decatur firefighters, who spent nearly 10 hours assisting with a firefight at Bluffton on Monday, were back at it again this morning.
This time, city firefighters went east to assist the Willshire (Ohio) Fire Department with a fire at the Farmers Grain on US 33 at the northen edge of the village.
Fire was reported in a corn bin at the rear of the complex.

STARKE, Fla. (AP) — A man who was convicted of the 1989 killings of an Ohio woman and her two teenage daughters in Florida as they returned from a dream vacation to Disney World was executed Tuesday.
Oba Chandler, 65, was given a lethal injection and pronounced dead at 4:25 p.m. Tuesday at the Florida State Prison, Gov. Rick Scott’s office said. The execution began at 4:08 p.m. and concluded without any problems.
November 15th
A major fire in downtown Bluffton on Monday delayed the sentencing of Tyler White, convicted last month by a Wells Circuit Court jury of killing his estranged wife, Amy, a former South Adams High School student, athlete and coach.
It was not clear today when the sentencing will be completed.
According to reports, the proceedings were only about halfway finished when the courthouse was evacuated due to the nearby fire.
Solid waste officials in Adams County are taking a proactive approach to potential changes in state laws and guidelines governing trash collection and disposal, trying to head off what they believe to be unnecessary and cumbersome regulations before they become law.
