Tragedy marred the long Fourth of July holiday weekend in Adams County, with a young rural Monroe man losing his life in a farming accident and several people injured in traffic accident.
Mahlon I. Schwartz, died at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne on Friday night of injuries suffered in a farming accident earlier that evening.
An Adams County Sheriff's Department report said Schwartz, 22, was run over by a hay wagon on County Rd. 200 South at CR 300 East around 7:49 p.m.
The pride and joy was evident in Michael Baer's voice.
It was not a personal pride, although that would have been understandable for the man who led a 16-member delegation from South Adams Schools on a remarkable humanitarian mission to provide clean drinking water to residents of the earthquake-ravaged areas around Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
