Enrollment at North Adams Community Schools continues to decline, with the student population throughout the school district this year reflecting the eighth consecutive year in which student numbers have been lower than the previous year.
Superintendent Wylie Sirk told members of the North Adams school board on Tuesday that 1,854 students are enrolled in kindergarten through grade 12 this year.
That number is down from 1,977 at the start of the 2010 school year.
The state Department of Education failed to act as expected at its recent meeting on a citizens' petition that would change the method of seating North Adams school board members from the current appointment process to a seven-member elected board.
During his Decatur Chamber of Commerce address on Monday, Tom Nordwick, president and chief executive officer of the Adams Health Network (AHN), spoke about the medical practitioners here.
He said the replacement surgeon for Dr. H.S. Lee, who retired this year earlier than expected due to health reasons, will start next July 17, 2012. He currently is finishing his medical studies at Michigan State University.
A committee has been assembled at North Adams Community Schools to study and review the school district's current use of buildings and grounds, with the goal of returning recommendations a year from now that will guide school leaders in making long-term decisions regarding housing students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
As the latest Adams Central improvement project moves toward completion next month ahead of schedule, AC Superintendent Mike Pettibone told the school board at its Tuesday-night session that the plans contain plenty of classroom space.
Pettibone said he chose to speak out because of rumors in the district that the project would leave the school with an insufficient number of classrooms.
Driver's education will continue to be offered at South Adams Schools — at least for the current school year — according to Superintendent Scott Litwiller at a board of education meeting on Tuesday.
