Quake felt in this area

    Did you feel it? 
    Many Adams County residents did, starting their day with an event of seismic proportions as the rumblings of an earthquake were felt locally.    A spokesman with the U.S. Geological Survey organization confirmed a magnitude 4.2 earthquake occurred in Indiana at 7:55 a.m. today and was felt in Adams County and the surrounding area.
    The brief event was highlighted by a mild rumbling. And then it was over.

Rifle team people shoot a message to Abel: thanks

    Charlie Abel, coach of the Bellmont High School rifle team throughout its 50 years of existence, was honored at halftime of Tuesday's boys baskeball game with the presentation of a plaque.
    An open house was held at the range following the game.
    An estimated 40 to 50 current and former members of the rifle team were on hand for the presentation of the plaque which noted Abel's 50 years of dedication to the sport and the school.

    COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — In a legal victory for victims’ families, Ohio’s highest court ruled Tuesday that a university’s insurance coverage extended to a charter bus that crashed in 2007, killing five student baseball players and two others.

No. 8 story: Berne clock tower

    After five years of meticulous planning and aggressive fund-raising, spearheaded by the Berne Community Development Corporation, the Muensterberg Plaza clock tower in Berne became a reality in 2010, making it the No. 8 story of the year as chosen by employees of the Decatur Daily Democrat.
    Ground was ceremoniously broken in mid-March and work on the 160-foot clock tower, funded exclusively by private donations, began almost immediately.

No. 7 story: GOP sweeps election

    Mirroring the national trend, the Republican Party in Adams County swept all countywide contested races in the Nov. 2 general election. The GOP landslide was ranked as the No. 7 story of the year in voting by employees of the Decatur Daily Democrat.
    Republican candidates posted upset victories over three sitting Democrats, held onto two other contested seats, and filled a pending vacancy in the county sheriff’s office.

Commissioners reappoint 23, select 2 new

    It's that time of year again: for appointments by the Adams County Commissioners.
    At Monday's meeting, the three elected executives voted unanimously to rename 23 people to local positions and to name two new people to other posts.
    Both new appointees, Max Beer and Rex King, were named to the Property Tax Assessment Board of Appeals.

No. 6 story of 2010: AC project

    The approval of a $10 million construction and renovation project — and a change in educational philosophy — at Adams Central School was ranked as the No. 6 story in Adams County during 2010 in balloting by employees of the Decatur Daily Democrat.

Grimm is named fire chief at Berne

    After a dozen years as Berne's fire chief, Art Nussbaum is stepping down.
    After 11 years as a Berne firefighter, William "Bill" Grimm is stepping ... up as the new chief.
    Berne Mayor John Minch has appointed Grimm to replace Nussbaum after Nussbaum chose to give up the job. Nussbaum will, however, stay on as a firefighter, having compiled more than 25 years on the department.

No. 3 story: State volleyball champs

    In dominating fashion, Craig Krull’s 2010 Bellmont girls volleyball team steamrolled through the class 3A playoffs, going 18-1 in total games, to claim the school’s second state volleyball championship in four years.
    The championship effort was voted as the Democrat’s No. 3 news story of 2010.

Vaccines to be given here

    The Adams County Health Department has announced that teams from the immunization program of the Indiana Department of Health will be at the health office in Room 320 of the Adams County Service Complex in Decatur next Tuesday  to give required vaccine shots to students who will be in the sixth grade in the 2011-12 school year.
    The vaccines will be given free of charge from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
