GE cooperation draws city’s praise

    Work on demolishing the General Electric buildings in Decatur continues to go smoothly and, barring any major problems, the project could be completed by Thanksgiving, perhaps earlier.
    Mayor John Schultz told city council on Tuesday night all structures on the 9th Street property are expected to be down by the end of this week. “Then it will take a couple more weeks or so to clean up. They (the Brandenburg company heading up the work) are pretty sure they’ll be done before Thanksgiving; maybe before that.”

SA superintendent Litwiller rewarded with 4-year pact

    Scott Litwiller has spent nearly his entire life at South Adams Schools, attending the elementary and middle schools as a child, before later graduating from South Adams High School. After a stint in college to complete his education and get his bachelor and master’s degrees, Litwiller returned to South Adams, first as a teacher, then as a building principal before being named superintendant four years ago.

SA fall concert series begins

     Members of the middle school and high school instrumental band classes at South Adams Schools performed in concert Tuesday evening in the high school  gymnasium with a large crowd on hand.

Fall colors a treat for area residents

     Autumn’s color show was likely at its peak late last week, with these horses surrounded by the yellows, oranges and reds that briefly put on a show in Adams County. The photo looks west off Ohio-Indiana State Line Road south of C.R. 900S.

 

4-H soup, sandwich event is Nov. 8

     The Adams County Fair Board, along with the 4-H Council, Adams County Extension Board and 4-H Clubs, will hold the fourth annual 4-H soup and sandwich and auction fundraiser beginning at 4 p.m. Nov. 8 in the 4-H Expo Hall in Monroe. All proceeds from the meal and auction will be used for fairgrounds improvements and upkeep.
     The meal will consist of 4-H chili or chicken noodle soup; sloppy Joe, ham, hotdogs and coney dogs; drinks and soft serve ice-cream. Free will donations for the meal will be accepted.

A night at the museum

     Chandler Thomas checked out decorations at the Adams County Historical Museum over the weekend. The museum will be open to the public Friday and Saturday and and again Oct. 30-Nov 1 from 6-10 p.m. All three floors of the museum are decorated for Halloween, using items from the collection of Mabel Miller.  Museum will also host Trick or Treaters on Halloween Night from 6-8 pm. The Haunted Decatur Wagon Tours are now sold out.

Barkey is called on, literally, to answer council’s wage questions

    Adams County Engineer and Highway Department Superintendent Tim Barkey was literally called before the Adams County Council last week as they attempted to tie up loose ends before considering the approval of the 2015 budget.
    Councilors questioned why all 15 maintenance workers were being paid the same $17.08 hourly rate regardless of their years of service, and why there was a line item in his budget that offered an apparent 60-cent bonus to those same employees.    

BHS to honor are veterans in ceremony set for Nov. 11

     Area veterans are invited to attend a special Veterans Day program at Bellmont High School’s Erekson Theatre on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
    A hospitality room with refreshments will be available beginning at 8:30 a.m. The program will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by a provided lunch in the library. The featured speaker will be Dennis Covert, a Vietnam Navy veteran and member of the board of directors for Honor Flight of Northeast Indiana. Family Fall Harvest Party held Sunday at The Bridge

     The Bridge Community Church in Decatur held its Family Fall Harvest Party Sunday evening as one of the first events of this year’s Callithumpian Festival. Food, games and indoor trick-or-treating were part of the event.
