An unusually warm day in November started off like any other for the family of Northwest fourth grader Hailey Smith. However, before the day was done, Hailey would become a heroine. See Thursday's print or online edition of the Democrat for the complete story.
Every year, Adams County pays an annual self-funded reinsurance fee to health care provider BeniComp as part of the contractual agreement with the company. This year, the total amount of the reinsurance fee was $57,960, due to be paid to BeniComp by Jan. 15.
Monday morning at the weekly meeting of the Adams County Commissioners, Auditor Mary Beery reported an anomaly in the billing process resulted in another entity erroneously paying the fee for the county.
With rain in the forecast for Thursday, opportunities to sled down the big hill along Piqua Road in Decatur may be short-lived. These two boys took advantage of the opportunity Tuesday afternoon.
City Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert makes use of the new utility drop box located behind the new city hall building, which is monitored by a security camera. Decatur residents wishing to make utility payments may now do so at the new location.
BERNE— A 59-52 wire to wire victory for Bellmont over South Adams on Tuesday night seemed to be a lot closer than the end result.
The Braves improved to 5-8 with the win, while the Stars dropped to 4-8 on the season.
"I was proud of the way we started the game, the way we continued to push and the way we finished the game," noted Bellmont coach John Baker. "I would have liked to have hit some more of our free throws to extend the lead but I can't fault the effort tonight."

The purchase of a new piece of equipment will revolutionize production at EP Graphics and provided extra incentive for Berne City Council on Monday to unanimously pass a resolution approving the renewal of the company’s annual CF-1 tax abatement.
It had been a while since they’d been needed, following more than a week of mostly pleasant (for January) weather, but snowblowers emerged from garages en masse Monday morning following a 2-inch snow which fell the previous day.
The two-year state budget currently being debated in the Indiana General Assembly will likely include additional monies necessary to combat the social ills caused by an epidemic of heroin and methamphetamine use in the Hoosier State.
