John ‘Randy’ Everett

    John “Randy” Everett, 64, Decatur, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, at his residence. He was born in Lexington, Ky. Jan. 8, 1950, to the late Donald C. and Wilma (Bailey) Everett. On Nov. 15, 1975, he married Nan K. Mankey.
    He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Decatur. He was a graduate of Sam’s Electrical Institute. Randy was the systems engineering manager for 27 years at Thunderbird Products before retiring in June of 2014.

Irene Kay Myers

    Irene Kay Myers, 87, Monroeville, died at 7:40 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
    She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Saturday, April 23, 1927, to the late Roy H. and Catherine T. (Marquart) Andress. She married Ralph J. “Buck” Myers June 20, 1948; he preceded her in death Oct. 12, 2012.

Group rallies to save Carnegie Library building

    More than two dozen local citizens and area officials packed Monday afternoon’s weekly meeting of the Adams County Commissioners to express their desire to save the former Carnegie Library in Decatur from the possibility of demolition to make room for the construction of a new Superior Court building.

County’s jobless rate: 4.4%

    The unemployment rate in Adams County during August was at or near historic lows, according to the monthly report issued Monday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
    The latest state report show the county’s jobless rate stood at 4.4 percent in August, down from 5.1 percent in July and well below the 6.3 percent rate from one year earlier. Five years ago, in August of 2009, the county’s unemployment rate stood at 14.1 percent.

Homecoming week events planned throughout the week at Bellmont

     Events are planned throughout the week as part of Homecoming Week at Bellmont High School. The activities kicked off Sunday with the annual mud volleyball game. The winning team, pictured above, was comprised of, in front from left, Bailey Highlen, Ashten Worth and Miranda Lockwood. In back are Dakota Massman, Conner Hess and Jeremy Razo. Additional photos are on Page 12A of today’s Democrat.

Braves best Jay County, N. Haven on soccer pitch

    Bellmont boys soccer recovered from their first two losses of the season against Homestead and Carroll to blank Jay County in an 8-0 rout and New Haven in a 5-1 decision.
    The Braves shook off a sluggish start playing defense most of the first half behind the stellar goal play of Caleb Schell who kept the Patriots off the scoreboard. Adam Weaver found the back of the net on a breakaway goal midway through the first half beginning a barrage of Bellmont goals.

Gerald G. Knittle

    Gerald “Jerry” G. Knittle, 35, Decatur, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2014. Jerry was born in Decatur Dec. 12, 1978, to Gerald D. and Bonnie L. (Whittenbarger) Knittle.
    Among survivors are his parents, Gerald and Bonnie Knittle of Decatur; and numerous aunts and uncles and their families.
  Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home, with Pastor Carol Tumbleson Evans officiating. Burial will be in Decatur Cemetery.

Ruth E. Crosby

    Ruth E. Crosby, 84, of Decatur, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, at Adams Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Fort Wayne Thursday, April 10, 1930, to the late Walter F. David and Dora M. (Hanke) David. She married Charles F. Crosby in Fort Wayne April 18, 1953; he survives.
    Ruth was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church-Fuelling and a longtime member of the choir. She retired in 1990 from Central Soya after 25 years of service.
