Streaking Starfires to clash with Norsemen

    Jason Arnold's South Adams football squad has risen from the ashes of an 0-5 start to reclaim their season and can actually go over the .500 mark this week as the 5-5 Starfires face John Diener's 5-5 Northfield Norsemen in the Secitonal 35 semi-finals at Starfire Field.

Five Squaws on All-NHC squad

    Bellmont, which dominated the NHC for the fifth straight year, did not exactly dominate the All-NHC squad, putting three players on the first team and two on the second team. The squad was evidently announced to the Journal-Gazette yesterday. The Daily Democrat received a fax this morning from New Haven High School.
    Coaches were allowed to nominate five players.

Irma A.M. Koehlinger

    Irma A.M. Koehlinger, 90, of Fort Wayne, died at 6:20 p.m. Monday in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
    She was born on January 30, 1920, in Van Wert County, Ohio to William J. and Mary Sauer Schumm Schumm.
    She married Walter J. Koehlinger on April 9, 1944, in Zion Lutheran Church at Schumm, Ohio; he passed away on May 13, 1983.
    Irma was a homemaker, a member of Trinity Lutheran Church at Fort Wayne, and a graduate of Willshire High School in Ohio in 1938.

Croner gains honor

    Scot Croner, principal at Bellmont High School since 2008, has been named by the Indiana Association of School Principals as its District 3 High School Principal of the Year for 2010.
    Croner will receive official recognition of the award during the association's annual fall conference on Nov. 21 in Indianapolis.
    District 3 of the IASP includes Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, LaGrange, Noble, Stueben, Wabash, Wells and Whitley counties.

Longtime bank employee about to step down at the age of 93

    The Bank of Geneva has announced that Clarence “Ittle” Buckingham is retiring from his Geneva office maintenance position at the end of October. His last day of work will be this Friday.
    Buckingham, who is 93 years young, has worked at the Bank of Geneva for 29 years, following his retirement in 1981 from Naas Foods (now Red Gold), where he was employed for 38 years.

High winds continue here today

    A high-wind warning remained in effect for the Decatur area and much of northeast Indiana today, but no storms of the type that hit the area on Tuesday were expected.
    The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette reported in its morning edition that meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Syracuse confirmed that tornadoes touched down in Huntington, Whitley, Wabash and Van Wert counties. No serious injuries or deaths were reported.

    A tornado that apparently developed near the Indiana-Ohio state line caused significant damage in Van Wert County, Ohio, at midday Tuesday, but no one was injured.
    Van Wert County Emergency Management Director Rick McCoy reported that the twister struck about 11:15 a.m. as it moved north of US 224 toward Convoy, Ohio. Wind speeds were recorded at 80 to 85 mph.
    He also said strong rotational winds were spotted by radar near Berne, with speeds up to 70 mph.

Squaws hammer down Western for regional title

    An inspired Bellmont volleyball squad answered the challenge of a game Western team to close out the first two games, then put away the Panthers with dominating power in the third game, 25-9, to earn the 12th regional championship for BHS Tuesday in front of the largest crowd of the season at the Teepee.

Cowboys contain Bengals for DFL football championship

    The Daily Democrat Cowboys remained perfect Saturday, defeating the Burkhalter Plumbing and Heating Bengals 14-0 in the DFL championship game played at Bob Worthman Stadium.
    The Cowboys finished at 5-0 for the year and did not yield a touchdown the entire season. The Bengals moved the ball inside the Cowboys five-yard line in the final period, but lost the ball on a fumble.

Parade awards, honors listed; Isch gets key

    The usual passel of awards was passed out after Monday night's Callithumpian Parade, which was conducted in some of the best weather in the event's history.
     A huge crowd turned out for the annual event, with temperatures in the 60s.
    The four float awards went to the following: first, Kekionga Steel Drumz of Fort Wayne; second, The Haunted Barn in rural Hoagland; third, Fennig Landscaping; and fourth, Decatur Dance Academy.
