Spartans withstand Braves’ run for 57-42 NHC victory

    An unlikely hero stepped forward to hit a critical three-point shot for the Homestead Spartans with 5:12 to play in the fourth period Saturday night at the Teepee and the shot propelled the Spartans to a 57-42 Northeast Hoosier Conference boys basketball win over the Bellmont Braves.

Park Center report given

    A report by and about the Park Center counseling business in Decatur was given at the January meeting of the Adams County Council, since Park Center gets an annual $172,116 subsidy from the county.
    Paul Wilson, chief executive officer of Park Center, and Tonya Eiden, the manager of the Decatur office, gave the following figures about the agency's operations here from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010:
    • 670 clients seen.
    • 6,513 services provided to those clients.

Big biz winner Ideal launched in ’59

    Ideal Suburban Homes and Ideal Realty has been named recipient of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce's Large Business of the Year award, while the Small Business of the Year winner is Rebecca Cochran's certified public accounting firm.
    Both will be honored at the organization's annual meeting on Thursday, February 3, at the Knights of Columbus pavilion.
    Reservations for the Chamber event must be made by January 25 by calling the office, 724-2604. Tickets are $25.

Harold G. Clifton

    Harold G. Clifton, 82, of Ohio City, Ohio, died at 1:45 p.m. Sunday at his residence.
    He was born on February 23, 1928 in Wren, Ohio to William M. and Helen R. Barnett Clifton.
    He married Marilyn Kraner, who survives.
    He retired from International Harvester in Fort Wayne and was a veteran of the United States Navy.

Wilbur Kirchhofer

    Wilbur "Bill" Kirchhofer, 97, of Berne, died Sunday in Swiss Village Retirement Community.
     Funeral arrangements are pendng at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne.

Starfires cop ACAC wrestling crown

WOODBURN — South Adams had three champions and all 14 wrestlers placed Saturday as the No. 19 Starfires captured the ACAC Wrestling Tourney title with 221.5 points to the 190 of Garrett and 186.5 of Adams Central.
The tourney win gives the Starfires the outright ACAC wrestling championship as it goes along with the 7-0 record for the Stars in the ACAC dual-meet competition.

Lady Jets stun Leo in 42-point turnaround

MONROE — Adams Central's girls basketball team played lock-down defense against Leo to score a huge 50-44 upset in the ACAC game played Saturday at Central, reversing a 36-point loss to the Lady Lions just nine days ago in the ACAC tourney.
"We held a pretty good shooting team to 29 percent and our girls put on a tremendous effort to out-rebound a much bigger 37-29," stated Central Coach Sam Beer.

Spartans down Squaws for 6-0 NHC mark

FORT WAYNE — Homestead assured itself of at least a share of the Northeast Hoosier Conference title in girls basketball Friday night belting out an 81-55 victory over the Bellmont Squaws at the Spartans gym.
The win for Homestead moved them to 15-2 on the season and 6-0 in the NHC. Their last conference contest is next weekend against DeKalb (8-7, 3-2) but the Spartans have already defeated pre-season favorite Norwell (15-1, 5-1). Bellmont fell to 1-5 in NHC action and is 7-9 for the year.

Tigers surge past Jets 50-41

BLUFFTON — Ten days ago, Adams Central got field goals and free throws late in the game to seal a long-sought victory over Bluffton, 59-54.
Last night, it was the homestanding Tigers who got late baskets and foul shots to ice a 50-41 win that was also a key conference victory.

Hop picks Bears, Jets

Most of the sports talk-show "experts" feel that the Green Bay Packers' Rodgers is the best of the four quarterbacks remaining in the NFL playoffs, and that the Packers will walk into Soldier Field Sunday and sack the Bears, earning a Super Bowl spot.
Okay, Rodgers has a year of experience on the Jets' Mark Sanchez. He's better than the unpredictable Jay Cutler of Chicago. But better than Ben (I've done my penance) Roethlisberger of Pittsburgh, who has a pair of the gaudy rings? I don't think so.
