Berne explores 1-way street process

    The proposal by new Berne business Kaup Pharmacy last month to make part of Jefferson Street one-way is slowly moving forward, according to City Attorney Dave Baumgartner.
    Jill Andrews, a representative of Kaup Pharmacy, and Brett Miller of Miller Land Surveying Engineering met with Berne City Council in August to propose Jefferson Street — between Franklin and Main streets — be made into a one-way northbound thoroughfare to accommodate the pharmacy’s plans to include a drive-thru window at its new location.

Carroll fends off scrappy Central effort in four sets

    MONROE—The 4A #6 Carroll Chargers came into the Hangar on Monday night looking to escape with a victory against a scrappy, upset-minded Adams Central team ranked fifth in 2A in the latest coaches' poll.
    After dropping a nail-biter in the first set, the Chargers regrouped and left one of the toughest gyms in the region to play in, with a win, 25-20, 20-25, 17-25, 18-25.

Berneice A. Mailloux

    Berneice A. Mailloux, 80, Monroe, passed away Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, at her residence. She was born in Elliot, N.D., May 13, 1934, to the late Melvin and Noma (Imboden) Strahm. On Oct. 20, 1953, she married her husband of 60 years, Neil Mailloux; he survives.
    She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and its Rosary Society. She was a homemaker and worked at C.T.S. for 17 years.

    Susan Emma (Young) Miller, 67, Decatur and formerly of Huntington and Fort Wayne, passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at Adams Woodcrest Retirement Community.
    She was born in Huntington Friday, Aug. 15, 1947, to the late Harry Frederick and Lorene May (Williams) Young.

    Noel Thomas Miller Jr., our dearly loved son, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away into the arms of Jesus his Savior after a valiant battle with cancer. He was 58 years young.
    He was born in Van Wert Aug. 3, 1956, to Nancy Jane (Carson) Miller of Van Wert and the late Dr. Noel Thomas Miller.

    Gloria M. Werling, 89, New Haven, died Sept. 6, 2014, at Visiting Nurse Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
    The New Haven native was a loving farm wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose lifelong mission was to serve her family. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in New Haven.
  Among survivors are her son, Bill (Sandra) Werling; three grandsons, Jonathon (Traci), Joseph (Heidi) and Jason; five great-grandchildren, Madelyn, Morgun, Abby, Taylor and Christian of Decatur and Hoagland.

    COLUMBIA CITY— With more than half of the state's Friday night grid battles postponed to Saturday, the Bellmont Braves traveled back up to Columbia City Saturday afternoon down 15-8 in the middle of the third quarter but BHS scored 18 straight unanswered points to upend the Eagles 25-15 in the game's finish.

Heads shaved to fight cancer in kids

     Decatur resident Mabel Johnson had her head shaved in the fight against childhood cancer Saturday morning at Rejuvenation Spa and Salon. Money raised during the day was for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Taking the first swipe of Johnson’s hair was Ally Bea Roessner, 4, of Fort Recovery, Ohio, who is engaged in her own fight against cancer. Holding Ally was her father, Mark.


BHS plans 'Coats Because We Care' collection

     The National Honor Society at Bellmont High School, led by seniors Ashley Sheets and Amanda Everett, will host the fourth annual Coats Because We Care event during the Braves’ home football game Friday night.
     Community members are asked to pull through the drive at the football stadium and hang their gently-used, clean coats or new coats on the fence. The coats will be donated to local charities.  Monetary donations will also be accepted at the gate and during half time.
