Walter E. Wheeler

June 2, 2011

    Walter E. Wheeler, 97, formerly of Monroe, died Saturday in Swiss Village Retirement Community at Berne.
    He was born to Charles and Nora Wheeler.
    Among survivors are a former wife, Edith I. Wheeler of Pleasant Mills; one son, Jim Wheeler of Terre Haute; two daughters, Judith King of Bluffton and Bonnie Cart of Monroe; one stepdaughter, Carol Hornaday of Mesa, Arizona; and two stepsons, Roger Call of Monroe and Robert Call of Summerville, South Carolina.

Storms hit city, county

    Adams County was almost floating today after a series of thunderstorms drove through the region as one of the wettest springs in local history continues.
    The worst-off appear to be the area's farmers, who have been unable to plant crops due to the continual muddy conditions in fields.
    Decatur and Adams County emerged mostly unscathed but drenched from the seemingly endless storms which rolled through the area during a period of 10 top 12 hours on Wednesday afternoon and early this morning.

Over a dozen people injured

    BEDFORD, Ind. (AP) — Strong storms and possible tornadoes ripped through southern Indiana Wednesday night, injuring more than a dozen people and flattening homes, barns and other structures while scattering debris along their paths, authorities said.
    An apparent tornado struck east of Bedford as powerful thunderstorms swept across Indiana, damaging buildings, toppling mobile homes and trees across several counties while winds cut power to more than 60,000 homes and businesses.

    Jessie E. Bowers, 83, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2011, at Kingston Residence in Fort Wayne.
    She was born on June 17, 1927 in Stigles, Oklahoma.
    Surviving relatives include her children, Roxanne Chilcote and Vicki Frances of Fort Wayne and Barbara Hirschy of Decatur; siblings Walter Holloway, Clare Hanthorne, and Gert Bowser; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Roe A. Lehman

    Roe A. Lehman, 77, of Berne, passed away on May 24, 2011 at 8 p.m. after suffering several years of Parkinson’s Disease and leukemia.
    Roe was born on April 4, 1934, in Adams County to Peter B. and Elizabeth (Welty) Lehman.
    He is survived by a son, Todd Lehman of rural Arcola, and two granddaughters, Emma and Tessa Lehman.
    His daughter, Tandy, was fatally injured in a hayride accident of October of 1978.

Joel A. Neuenschwander

    Joel A. Neuenschwander, 82, of Berne, died Wednesday at Swiss Village Retirement Community.
    He was born to Amos and Lovina Amstutz Neuenschwander.
    Among survivors are three sons, Michael and Roger Neuenschwander of Berne and Allen Neuenschwander of Willshire, Ohio.
    Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Berne Evangelical Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Visiting hours are 2-8 p.m. Friday in Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne, and one hour prior to services.

    Carolyn J. Schmitt, 76, of Decatur, died today at home.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeeral Home, Decatur.

BHS foursome just misses state berth

    Though the time that the Bellmont girls 1600 relay team ran would have won three other regionals, the record-setting BHS foursome will not be competing at the June 4 IHSAA State Girls Track and Field meet.
    Bellmont coach Carl Risch learned  Wednesday afternoon that the squad fell two places short of making the field. It's the same case with freshman hurdler Holly Hankenson. She fell two places short of making the state field in the 300 sticks.

Tourney games shifted around

    The the second time this week, thunder showers caused postponement of sectional play Wednesday afternoon.
    Bellmont's Baseball Sectional was to have opened Wednesday with Wayne taking on Norwell. That game has been pushed off until today. Bellmont is slated to meet Maconaquah in the Friday, 5:30 p.m. game.
    If rain hits again today, their would likely be added games on Monday, which is Memorial Day. Currently, only a 1 p.m. championship game is set for BHS Monday.

Harvey sprints to state berths

    FORT WAYNE — Sophomore sprinter Alexis Harvey earned a second straight trip to the IHSAA State Track and Field Finals, earning second with a record-breaking time in the 200 meter dash and she took third for a state spot in the 100.
