Baumer, Combs named lst team All-ACAC cagers

    The numbers don't lie!
    Adams Central junior Maverick Baumer hit 58 percent of his two-point shots and averaged 15.4 points per game for the Jets this past season. Sophomore Dalton Combs  hit 48 percent of his two-pointers and scored 10.6 points per game. Both were named first team All-ACAC in boys basketball Monday.
    South Adams junior Dustin Wanner, was also named to the first team.

Midget K’s win big tourney

    The Fort Wayne Midget Komets went on a four-game tear at Kalamazoo last weekend and captured the National Junior Prospects Hockey League championship showdown for 16-under teams.
    The big final weekend closed out the season for the Tier 1, AAA junior league.
    Bellmont High School junior Brian Hakes is a defenseman/left wing for the Fort Wayne team. Cody Rice, a Norwell student, is one of the team's goaltenders and had a spectacular 44-save performance in Sunday's championship game.

Firm hired to guide bridge work

    If all goes well, the only covered bridge in Adams County will be fully restored by the middle of next year.
    At Monday's meeting of the county commissioners, the three executives signed a contract with USI Consultants of Indianapolis for an amount not to exceed $75,000 so USIC can survey and inspect the bridge, create a bridge design plan, draw up specifications for the rehabilitation project, and perform oversight of the bidding and renovation processes.

Stutzman, Holcomb to speak at local Lincoln Day dinner

    Two prominent Indiana Republicans will share guest speaking roles at this year's Lincoln Day dinner in Decatur on Thursday, April 28, sponsored by the Adams County Republican Party.
    The speakers will be U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman from rural Howe, who was elected after Rep. Mark Souder resigned in 2010, and Indiana Republican Party Chairman Eric Holcomb.

Max E. Andrews

    A memorial service for Max E. Andrews, 78, of Placentia, California, a former Decatur resident who died on February 27, will be held at 1 p.m. this Saturday at New Beginnings Faith Center in Decatur, with Pastor Floyd Vieth officiating.
    Visitation will be from noon-1 p.m. Burial will be in MRE Cemetery, rural Berne.
    Preferred memorials are to the color guard at American Legion Post 43 in Decatur.

Elizabeth M. Reiners

    Elizabeth M. "Beth" Reiners, 80, of Berne, died Monday in Swiss Village Retirement Community.
    She was born to Alfred and Ellanora Graf Oesau.
    Among survivors are her husband, Harry R. Reiners; two sons, Michael Reiners of Berne and Dr. Andrew Reiners of Indianapolis; and two daughters, Amy West and Mrs. Tony (Maria) Anderson of Berne.

Roger T. Storey

    Roger T. Storey, 91, formerly of Michigan City, Indiana, died on Sunday, March 20, at Hamilton Communities in New Carlisle, Indiana.
    The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Michigan City, with Pastor Mark Reshan officiating.
    The family will receive relatives and friends today from 4-8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Corrections program growth seen

    Adams County's Community Corrections program is destined for growth so Councilman Matt Dyer said at this week's city council meeting that city department heads and others should come up with projects for those in the program to handle.
    Criminal offenders who enter the Community Corrections program are assigned to perform community service at various sheriff’s departments, parks, city or county properties or non-profit agencies. They receive earned credit time but no pay.

Fathers, sons are state royalty

    At last week's Bellmont wrestling banquet, 23-year head coach Brent Faurote noted that senior John Mahlan and junior Brooks Faurote became the first two Bellmont wrestlers to follow their fathers to state this past season.
    John qualified for the IHSAA State Wrestling finals at 160 pounds and finished his career at 79-32. His dad, Chris (upper left) was a three-time state placer, winning the 185-pound title in 1979. He was a state runner-up in 1978 and placed third at 177 pounds in 1977. He went 112-10 in his career.

Jauregui ready for IU track

    Former Bellmont state runner-up Travis Jauregui is preparing for his first spring high jump season with the Indiana University Men's Track Team.
    Jauregui completed indoor competitions recently. Travis cleared over 6'9" last June to earn second place in the state boys high jump competition at the Indiana track and field complex.
    "I'm learning a whole new technique," noted Jauregui.
