Governor a surprise city visitor

    Gov. Mitch Daniels made a brief stop in Decatur on Thursday, with no apparent agenda other than a good tenderloin sandwich and some onion rings.
    He found them at the West End Restaurant, taking time between a morning engagement in Fort Wayne and and an afternoon one in Portland to take on some nourishment and to chat with other customers.
    "I learn a lot in places like this," Daniels said during a one-on-one interview.

Wanted man apprehended in Decatur

    A man accused of pulling off three robberies in Fort Wayne within five hours early Thursday morning was arrested in Decatur around 7 a.m. today by city police and was quickly transferred to the custody of authorities in Allen County.
    Police Chief Ken Ketzler said this morning that Christopher Myles was apprehended in an apartment on 17th St. He was taken into custody without any incidents.
    Myles will be charged with robberies at the following sites:

New ruling opens medical insurance for more Hoosiers

    Officials at Adams Memorial Hospital have announced that a recent ruling by the State of Indiana has made it possible for up to 8,000 individuals currently without medical insurance to be covered by the Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP).

    Rex E. Bovine, 75, of Decatur, died at home on Thursday.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home, Decatur.

Olive M. Taylor

August 5, 2011

    Olive M. Taylor, 85, formerly of Decatur, died on August 3, 2011, at Convoy Care Center in Convoy, Ohio.
    She was born on July 26, 1926 in Granite City, Illinois, to William C. and Ruth E. (Lewis) Bilyeu.
    She married B. Lee Taylor on January 29, 1944. He preceded her in death on January 31, 2002.
    Olive was a graduate of the University of Louisville and a homemaker and had attended Crossroad Church in Decatur.

Squaw golfers fire solid 180

    The Bellmont girls golf team split a pair of dual meets in the past two nights taking out Northrop 180-208 Tuesday night at Cross Creek Golf Course and then was narrowly downed 196-198 by Blackford on Wednesday at the Blackford Country Club.

BHS All-Sport passes to be sold

    The Bellmont Athletic Department has announced the sale of All-Sport Passes for the 2011-2012 school-year.
    The passes are to be used for admission to any home, regular season, Bellmont High School athletic contest throughout the school year. The passes will go on sale starting Monday, August 8, from 8:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be sold every weekday following at the high school office.

Villa Lanes will reopen

    Just like automatic ball-return, bowling is back in Decatur.
    As Mike Miller says, "Villa Lanes is bowling in Decatur."
    Miller, who was born in 1960, the same year that Villa Lanes was opened by Dick Mies and wife Gwen, is the manager of the revived and redone Villa Lanes on US 224 West and its adjoining restaurant, Molly's Place.

Brothers help others through lemonade sales

    Jon and Ike Ruble of rural Decatur, sons of Joe and Becky Ruble, manned a lemonade stand on Wednesday at the corner of 5th and Jackson Sts. in Decatur.
    The boys sold lemonade last year and earned $110. That money, along with the proceeds from this year's sale, will be donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Adams County.

Habitat work will begin Saturday

    Officials of Habitat for Humanity of Adams County have announced that the first work day for volunteers at the next Habitat house project, in Geneva, will be held this Saturday.
    The site is located at Washington and Pyle Sts., two blocks north of the downtown fire station and one block from US 27.
    The work day will start at 8 a.m. and lunch will be provided by the Habitat organization.
    The parents and two sons who will live in home will also help build it.
